We ask, please, that anyone who is unwell not attend school. If you have symptoms of covid, please test before returning to school. Thanks so much.

This week we have been celebrating Canteen Week with our canteen staff, Michelle, Savet, Anne, Pila, by giving them messages of thanks throughout the week.

The Year 12 School-Based RE classes are currently undertaking Community Service activities. This week some of the classes at St Joseph's enjoyed reading time, maths assistance, and Italian sessions with Grades Prep-2.

EJ (Ester Junior) has been enjoying what are perhaps the last sunshine-filled days of autumn. The students have added to her enjoyment with lots of pats and cuddles and invites to lunch!

Year 8 Italian Incursion

On Tuesday 30th April all the Year 8 students studying Italian had a wonderful incursion on their cultural topic of Carnevale and the theatrical tradition, which dates back to the 16th Century, of the Commedia dell’Arte.

Mason and Lily, from the theatre company “Make a Scene” immersed the students in the tradition of the “Commedia dell’Arte” through their show “Venice in Love”. This show incorporated conventions of the Commedia such as stock characters, costumes, comic routines, exaggeration, improvisation and audience participation.

They also participated in a Drama workshop with Mason and the masks of the Commedia dell’Arte characters and were able to share their mini slapstick-Commedia performances with the group. In another session, students had the opportunity to be artistically creative and decorate their own Carnevale masks.

Here is what some students had to say about the day:

“We enjoyed everything we did during the incursion. The performance was funny and entertaining, capturing everyone's attention and the great storyline. Mask-making was fun and the resources were great. We especially liked the different masks we could choose from. During the Drama workshop, we learnt how to portray different Commedia characters and we also learnt about their personalities and the art of slapstick.”

Year 11 Economics Excursion

Last Friday, Year 11 Economics students traveled into the city to take part in activities related to their studies in Unit 1.

The students visited the Queen Victoria Markets to make connections between the theory and workings of markets in Australia. They were able to gather information about how the level of competition and market power influence prices in fruit and vegetable markets.

The students also attended a session at RMIT with Jo Perryman an expert in the field of Behavioural Economics and the study of the influences on consumer behaviour and decision making. The session was interactive with students participating in survey activities designed to demonstrate how marketing and framing can be used to influence consumer thinking.

Thank you to Mrs McKail for attending with us on the day.

Year 10 Printing and Paint

Following on from the incursion last term facilitated by Artist John Lawry, our Year 10 Painting and Printmaking students completed their, My (still) Life oil paintings!

As you can see from the reference photos and graphite drawings, students have impressively painted their three cherished items. Their ability to manipulate the paint to show tone, form and depth, has utterly blown me away!

Congratulations Year 10 class! We look forward to showcasing more artworks from our students at the Art and Technology exhibition on Friday 18 October 2024.

Year 9 Indonesian Excursion

On the 1st May, our Year 9 Indonesian students embarked on an exciting trip to the South Melbourne Market. This term, they’ve been diving into the vibrant world of Indonesian markets and mastering the art of bargaining.

The market also offered them a unique opportunity to compare shopping at a traditional market versus a supermarket. The day was topped off with a delightful stop at an Indonesian restaurant, where they savoured the delicious flavours of authentic Indonesian cuisine.

Calvary

Year Twelve students have commenced community service at Calvary Aged Care in Springvale this term. Fifteen students are visiting at each meeting and playing games or just chatting with the residents. It is a wonderful experience for our students to spend time with these beautiful elderly people.

Below is a snapshot of responses from some of our students:

I enjoyed spending time here with the elderly…….a man I spoke to today is looking forward to us coming back next time.

It was very eye opening. I was put with two ladies one of them couldn’t remember anything and mentioned that her family didn’t visit her. The other one was the opposite and told me many of her life stories. It made me very sad to hear about these, however I did enjoy talking with both of them. I felt like I learnt a lot from hearing her life experiences. They both were very happy given their circumstances which made me happy.

What I really liked about the excursion was the opportunity to talk to an elderly person at the aged care and do some mindful colouring. It was really fun. The lady I was talking  was so lovely and very kind We had some laughs while we were talking and just her smiling made me happier and brighter.

I enjoyed the activities with the people even if I couldn't communicate with them in English.

One thing I liked was playing volleyball with the people. They were very nice. I also liked talking to Ron and Vicky.

I enjoyed this visit more than the first one because the people there were more mobile this time around. And I enjoyed speaking to them.

It was nice hanging out with an elder, who spoke Vietnamese and it was sad because he thought we would visit him again. I  wanted to talk to him more because it was fun and interesting to me.

I really enjoyed this experience at the  Kingston Gardens Aged Care in Springvale. The one thing  I really enjoyed was meeting the elderly people and just talking to them and getting to know more about their/hobbies, and interests.

The students were wonderful with their listening skills and patience and this simple visit shows the value of connection and relationships for people of all ages. Thank you to Calvary Aged Care for allowing us this opportunity. The staff are amazing and so fabulous with the residents offering warmth and dignity. We look forward to our continuing relationship.

Here is what some students had to say about their day:

During the “Viva Italia Tour” at the NGV, we enjoyed learning more deeply about Italys rich culture and Art history. Seeing the artwork gave us an insight into the minds of the artists at that time and what life was like. The “Draw Like an Italian Master” workshop helped us understand how deeply connected art is to Italian culture. We liked exploring the various drawing techniques in the Art workshop. Overall this excursion helped us understand Italian culture better.

CGSAV Basketball

The senior Killester students took part in the CGSAV basketball tournament on Wednesday, April 24, at MSAC Stadium.

We were all a little nervous because this was our first year participating in Division 2 after winning the Division 3 championship last year. We had a slow start to the day, losing the first two games against Academy and Catholic Ladies College. But our team only became stronger as the day progressed. After that, we played Sacred Heart Oakleigh, Mount Saint Joseph, and Santa Maria where we scored 50 points. Overall finishing with a three-game winning streak that brought us to the semi-finals.

After winning those three games, we were confident going into the semi-finals, but also nervous because we knew we had already lost to this school earlier on in the day. But with all the girls working their hardest and our coach Mr. Rahimi making some crucial changes with our set plays, Killester defeated Academy by 9 points! And the big grand final match against Catholic Ladies College was up next.

The last game of the day. We fought hard right up until the very end, giving it all we had, but unfortunately couldn’t pull through, losing by 6 points. Although it wasn't the results we wanted, it was all a lot of fun and a great way to finish off our final basketball tournament for our year 12’s!

A special congratulations to Sarah S, who was awarded a well-deserved award of the finals MVP!!!! Finally, we want to thank our coach, Mr Rahimi, for his time, dedication and hard work in helping the team constantly improve and assisting us in making it to the finals!
