Year 5 Excursion to New Norcia: A Journey into History and Heritage

Our Year 5 students embarked on a memorable excursion to New Norcia this week, Australia’s only monastic town, nestled just two hours north of Perth. This unique experience offered students a rich opportunity to deepen their understanding of Western Australia's religious and cultural heritage, particularly through the lens of our College patron, Dom Rosendo Salvado.

Walking in the Footsteps of Salvado

Students and staff enjoyed a tour of the historic town, where students explored the Benedictine monastery, the Abbey Church, and the Education Centre on the site of the original orphanage, participated in a prayer service with the Benedictine Monks and more. They learned about the incredible life and mission of Rosendo Salvado, a Spanish Benedictine monk who arrived in Western Australia in 1846. His vision of building a self-sufficient monastic town that respected and collaborated with the local Yued Noongar people left a legacy that continues to inspire our college values today.

Connecting to the Curriculum

This excursion aligns closely with the Year curriculum, where students investigate colonial Australia and the impact of European settlement on First Nations peoples. The New Norcia experience provided a tangible connection to these learning areas, fostering critical thinking, empathy, and a deeper appreciation for our shared history.

EduDance: A Junior School Favourite

Meanwhile, back on campus, EduDance continues to be a highlight of the Junior School calendar. The energy and enthusiasm on display each week are a joy to witness, with students eagerly participating in their sessions. EduDance not only promotes physical activity and coordination but also builds confidence and teamwork. We are all looking forward to the end-of-term concert, where students will showcase their routines in a vibrant celebration of movement and music. It promises to be a wonderful community event!

Looking Ahead: Swimming Lessons in Term 4

As we move into the final term of the year, preparations are well underway for swimming lessons, which will commence early in Term 4 for students in Years 3 to 6. These lessons are a vital part of our Health and Physical Education curriculum, focusing on water safety, stroke development, and building confidence in aquatic environments.

Families will receive detailed information shortly regarding schedules, required gear, and transport arrangements. We encourage all students to participate fully, as these lessons not only build essential life skills but also promote physical wellbeing and resilience.
