Year 11 Students Step into the Future of Medical Research at the Harry Perkins Institute

Last week, a group of enthusiastic Year 11 students had the unique opportunity to step beyond the classroom and into the cutting-edge world of medical science during an educational visit to the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research.

The focus of the day was on stem cells — the body's master cells with the remarkable potential to develop into many different types of cells. Students learned how stem cells are being used at the forefront of scientific research to better understand and treat a wide range of diseases, including cancer, neurological disorders, and, most notably during this visit, liver disease.

One of the highlights of the experience was the chance to work hands-on in a real research lab. Students were guided by expert scientists through the delicate process of micro-pipetting to create liver organoids — miniature, lab-grown liver models that mimic the structure and function of real human liver tissue. These organoids are vital tools in medical research, helping scientists to study liver function and disease, as well as test potential treatments in a controlled, ethical, and highly accurate way.

The visit provided invaluable insight into how science is applied in the real world, and sparked curiosity and inspiration among students interested in pursuing careers in health, science, and medical research.

A big thank you to Mr Ricafranca and the team at the Harry Perkins Institute for their time, expertise, and generosity in sharing their knowledge. It was an unforgettable experience that brought science to life and showed us all just how powerful research can be in improving lives.

Young Writers Workshop

On the 4th of September, selected Year 8 students embarked on their third Young Writers Workshop at the Fremantle Literature Centre. Nestled into the grounds of the Fremantle Prison, students immersed themselves into the world of character building and the genre of supernatural fantasy, under the knowledgeable mentorship of author Justin Somper.

Known for his fantasy and adventure series, Justin challenged the students to rethink the way they write their protagonists. Students were tasked with the goal to develop both ordinary and extraordinary characters, pulling inspiration from lovable characters from literature and media to help write their own unique character. Throughout this journey, the students were fortunate to have a published author ready to read their work and to discuss their unique ideas. This incredibly unique level of mentorship provided students with the guidance required to elevate their characters to astonishing heights.

The session closed with a Q&A, with our students eager to hear the process of turning an idea into a published novel series. From working through writer’s block to helping build anticipation in a story, the students walked away from the Young Writers Workshop with some handy hints for their future best sellers.

Year 5 New Norcia Retreat

On our trip to New Norcia, students learnt about Dom Rosendo Salvado and his role in establishing the town. They also discovered the history and culture of the Yued people, the traditional custodians of the land. Students joined the monks in a time of prayer, gaining insight into the Benedictine way of life. During the visit, they explored the historic girls’ school and boys’ school, learning about the daily lives of students in the past.

Netball Club

Our Netball Club has had a strong start, with the girls showing up each week and playing with great energy. It’s been exciting to watch some of our first-time players quickly pick up the game and grow in confidence. The team spirit has been fantastic, with everyone encouraging and supporting each other on and off the court. We’d love to see even more students — both boys and girls — join us, so if you’re keen to give netball a go, come join us each Tuesday morning! For more information, please contact Mrs Hailey Weaire (hailey.weaire@cewa.edu.au).
