Rest: A Holy Rhythm for Our Families
In our busy lives, we often measure our worth by our productivity, feeling guilty for taking a moment to rest. But our Catholic faith teaches us a different rhythm—one of rest, worship, and connection. The Third Commandment, "Remember to keep holy the Sabbath day," isn't a suggestion; it's a divine invitation to step away from our work and into God's presence, and into the heart of our families.
These term holidays are a gift, a designated time to lay down our burdens and recharge not just our bodies, but our spirits. It’s a chance to stop "doing" and start "being"—being present with God and with our children. This sacred time allows us to strengthen the bonds that matter most and to show our children that their value isn't tied to their accomplishments, but to their inherent worth as God's beloved children.
Think of rest not as an absence of activity, but as an act of trust in God's providence. When we take a day to rest, we are proclaiming that God is in control, not us. We are making room for God to work in our lives and for our families to flourish. Let’s make a conscious effort to reclaim this time, turning off our devices and tuning into one another.
Prayer for Our Families
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for the gift of rest and for the precious time we have with our families. Help us to remember this gift and to keep it holy. Guide us to set aside our work and worries, so we may rest in Your presence and in the love of our families. Strengthen our bonds and renew our spirits, so we may return to our week's work with a grateful heart.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
