All year levels have been having a ‘bowl’ in P.E classes.
We have been fortunate enough to secure a Sporting Schools Grant which gave us funding to run a Lawn Bowls program in P.E. Wednesday classes have coach Kyra running them through the skills associated with the game of Lawn Bowls. All other classes have completed similar lessons during P.E. These lessons form part of a Target games focus for all year levels.
It has been fantastic to see all year levels embrace a sport that a lot knew nothing about. Some of the activities have included:
Tunnel Bowls - similar to tunnel ball but using a modified lawn bowl with a focus on how to hold the bowl and which way it needs to roll.
Hoops - hoops set out at variety lengths with different points values with the focus being on the weight you use to roll the bowl. Students had to display persistence for this game and also calculate their score.
Closest to the Cone - using a white cone to replicate the ‘jack’ students had to roll and determine who was closest. This allowed them to see how they needed to adjust the weight at which they bowled.
Hit The Jack - using a black ball to replicate the jack students took turns to see who could draw their bowl closest
Hurdle Bowls - students had to work as a team to roll the bowl through two hurdles, each worth a point. The team with the highest score once everyone had a go was the winner.
This is a fully funded four week program and we look forward to seeing the students progress.
Division Netball
Earlier this term the netball team played at the Division carnival at Casey Stadium. They finished the day with two wins and two losses which placed them 3rd. The girls improved with every game and were the only team to get close to the eventual winners.
Senior Hoop Time
We had two teams represent the school at the Senior Hoop time basketball tournament earlier this term.
The Future stars team went through the day undefeated. They were nailing 3 pointers from beyond the arc, and most importantly were sharing the ball around. They beat Cranbourne West in the final by over 10 points.
The All Stars team had to work hard in a nail biting semi final that went to extra time. They then beat the previously undefeated Cranbourne West in a super defensive game in the final.
Both teams have now progressed to the Regionals finals to be played next term - an outstanding achievement.
Thanks to Alisha, Helen, John and Sam for helping the teams on the day and the parents for being a great cheer squad.
Upcoming events:
Tuesday 19th August - Casey Cup Netball (selected year 3, 4, 5 and 6 students)

The Foundation students have started the term off talking about the road to regulation. Discussing and demonstrating different emotions, and the importance of having control, to not act on our big emotions.
The Years 1 and 2 have been talking about Safety and Safe strangers. Ways to keep ourselves safe at school or when out at a park, as well as what to do if we get lost when we are out up the shops.
The year 3 students have been looking at being resilient, and what to do when something happens to us but it's not in our circle of control. While year 4 have been looking at advertising and the different tricks they do to make us buy their products.
The year 5 students have been talking about how to calmly manage conflict we might have. Identifying different types of conflict they have, and how to not allow our emotions to dictate the decisions we make. Year 6 have been looking at stereotypes and discrimination in advertising. Discussing the importance of everyone being represented and getting a say in things that matter.

Week 1 and 2 - Term 4
Year 2 and 3 students will have 2 lessons over two weeks with Deb and create a canvas in the style of the artist.
Foundation
Students have created their first underwater themed glow art for the upcoming Fiesta.
They used forks to paint a puffer fish giving it an implied spiky texture. They added fins and used pastels to add details like seaweed.
Students also made a sea anemone from a cardboard tube. They practiced their cutting skills and painted them with neon paint.
Year 1 and 2
Year 1 and 2 students have created their first underwater glow art for the Fiesta. They used the scrape painting technique to boldy cover their page with bright rich colours. When dry, they learned how to draw and cut a spiral shape from the painted paper. They used these spirals as tenatacles for their jellyfish. To make the top they used paper bowls creatively decorated to form the head. Ribbons and neon paper were used to make even more tentacles.
Students have also learnt about the artist Keith Haring and why he started drawing figures in twisted and unusual shapes. Did you know he was inspired by break dancers on the street?
Retrospect, 1989- Keith Haring
Students used paint sticks for the background and sketched figures by beginning with a stick figure and drawing a bubble outline. Students learnt how add small lines to make it look like their art is moving. We had lots of fun contorting our bodies into different shapes like in Keith's artworks.
Year 3
Students have created their first glow art for the underwater glow show at Fiesta. They used a scrape painting technique to drag bright neon colours across their page. Students used these painted papers and a cardboard tube to construct a bright and colourful stingray.
Students also used polystyrene balls and match sicks to create a sea urchin. This was a real challenge for their fine motor skills but prooved to be a very mindful activity.
Year 4
Year 4 students used inspiration from indigenous xray art to create their fish skeletons. Students had to be mindful of ensuring they cut on the fold to ensure their design opened successfully and was symmetrical. They really had to use their critical thinking skills!
Students also used neon coloured egg cartons to thread a hanging fish sculpture. Cutting and threading egg cartons prooved to be very challenging!
Year 5 and 6
Students have created a glowing underwater creature composition. They made choices about ther medium and the creature their work featured. Students considered which colours would be most effective and tested their materials under the blacklight.
The next task involved some critical thinking, planning and very well developed fine motor skills for creating an optical illusion cube. Students watched short clips and referred to drawings to assist them to make their own cube with a different optical illusion on each face. They learnt how lines, patterns and the simplicity of black and white can draw your attention to one or more areas in the artwork. Students had to pay close attention to symmetry, spacing and use rulers to measure and draw accurate and even balanced lines.
The kitchen is back up and running for Year 3-6 students this term. So far students have been learning some general kitchen safety, knife skills, how to knead, whisk and eat delicious food. The students have cooked, and eaten, Nachos with Salad & Scones with Jam and Cream. The feedback from the students so far has been mostly positive with some students overheard saying “Yum!” and “These are the best scones I have ever eaten!”
Kitchen lessons will continue over the rest of the term, with classes cooking on alternate weeks. They will be focussing on other important kitchen skills such as cleaning up after themselves, stewing fruit and safely cooking on a stovetop. When they are not cooking, Year 3&4 will be working on their WobbleBots and Year 5&6 will continue to develop their 3D printed cars.
Keep an eye on Compass over the coming weeks as we make the kitchen recipes available for students to try out at home.
The Foundation – Year 2 students have begun this term learning about coding/programming. They have been learning about algorithms and how these algorithms can be used to create events in programs. They will continue to develop their skills through the use of our Beebots, Spheros and online platforms such as code.org.
