Teaching and Learning

"When teachers focus on student growth rather than just achievement, they create opportunities for all students to succeed" - Hattie, J. (2009). Visible Learning.
Today marks my first month at Cranbourne South Primary School. Firstly, I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone in our school community - students, parents, and teachers alike, who have welcomed me with open arms. I have truly enjoyed getting to know each and every one of you and am looking forward to continuing my time here over the next 12 months in my capacity as Assistant Principal, Teaching and Learning.
Over the past four weeks, I have spent a lot of time in classrooms, getting to know your children, their teachers, and witnessing the wonderful learning that is taking place. In this short time, I have been so impressed by both the high quality of teaching and, most importantly, the persistence and personal growth of our students. I have encouraged teachers to celebrate these successes with their students, as doing so not only acknowledges their achievements but also inspires and motivates them to continue striving for their very best.
For families of students in Years 3 and 5, you would have recently received your child’s NAPLAN results. NAPLAN is a national assessment that provides a snapshot of your child’s learning in key areas such as reading, writing, language conventions, and numeracy. While it reflects performance at a single point in time, these results, alongside other learning data, give teachers valuable insights into each student’s strengths and areas for growth. Part of my role over the next 12 months will be working with our Middle Leaders and teaching staff to carefully review this data at both a classroom and whole school level. By identifying areas where students may need additional support or challenge, teachers can tailor their instruction and provide targeted learning opportunities in the classroom. This helps ensure that every student receives the right support to continue progressing in their learning journey and reach their full potential.
As Cate has recently highlighted, the preliminary NAPLAN results have shown a significant improvement in our NAPLAN data. This growth reflects the dedication of our teachers and the hard work of our students, and we are committed to continuing this progress while celebrating every step of each child’s learning journey.
If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s learning, we encourage you to start by speaking with your child's classroom teacher.
If you would like any further support after that, please feel free to contact me directly through my email Ashleigh.Bell2@education.vic.gov.au, the schools main contact number 9782 2999. I’m always happy to chat and work together to support your child’s learning journey at Cranbourne South PS.
