Raise Youth Mentoring – Now Every Tuesday in Term 2 and 3
We’re excited to announce that the Raise Youth Mentoring Program is now up and running!
Each Tuesday during Terms 2 and 3, a select group of Year 7 and 8 students will take part in this valuable initiative. The program pairs students with trained community volunteers to build key life skills such as communication, goal setting, and seeking support.
This initiative is a collaborative effort between our Student Wellbeing Team and Raise Youth Mentoring, made possible by a generous grant from Bendigo Bank (Community Bank Clifton Hill North Fitzroy). The support of the Bendigo Bank, community partnerships has enabled us to bring this fantastic opportunity to our school community.
We look forward to seeing the positive impact this program will have on our students’ confidence and personal development.
Celebrating IDAHOBIT
On Friday, May 16, our school proudly took part in IDAHOBIT – the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersex Discrimination and Transphobia. Celebrated each year on May 17th, IDAHOBIT is a Global Day of Action that raises awareness about the discrimination faced by LGBTQIA+ communities and promotes inclusion, respect, and equality for all.
At Northcote High, we marked the day with a variety of fun and meaningful activities organised by our lovely Wellbeing, Diversity and Inclusion captains alongside the Art Captains. Students and staff were invited to accessorise their uniform with a splash of rainbow to show their support and solidarity. We saw some amazing rainbow wigs, capes, and socks around the school!!
The library hosted a badge-making station, where students created their own pride-themed badges with messages of love and acceptance. Meanwhile, C-Block was filled with creative energy as students worked on inclusive and colourful artworks celebrating identity and diversity.
These activities were not only a celebration, but also a chance to learn and reflect on the importance of creating a safe and supportive environment for everyone, no matter who they are or who they love.
A big thank you to everyone who participated and helped make the day such a vibrant success. Let’s continue to stand together against discrimination and for kindness, respect, and equality every day of the year.
Love Bites Junior - Year 7 Program
Over the last few weeks our Year 7 students have participated in the Love Bites Junior program; a dynamic workshop that promotes respectful relationships, empathy and safety among young people.
The Student Wellbeing have been fortunate enough to co-facilitate the program with the help of a few of our region’s Secondary School Nurses. The program included interactive activities that explored important topics such as being compassionate towards ourselves and others, implementing healthy boundaries, communication, consent and respect. Through discussions and roleplays, our Year 7 students were encouraged to think critically about their relationships with others and how to make positive, respectful choices.
The Love Bites Junior program plays a vital role in our wellbeing curriculum, giving students practical tools to build healthy relationships and recognise the signs of unsafe or harmful behaviours. We’re so proud of how maturely our Year 7s approached these important topics, and we thank the facilitators and staff who helped deliver the program. By starting these conversations early, we are helping to create a safer and more respectful community for everyone.
As part of consolidating the learning from the Love Bites program, each Connect class were asked to create a poster to display around the school to promote the importance of respectful relationships. We've included a few examples below:
