On Monday, April 28, the Senior Boys embarked on their annual 86 tram ride down to JC Donath Reserve, potentially for the last time representing the great Northcote High School in footy. After resting during the first game, the lads took to the field to face William Ruthven. It was a tough start, but the team got the choccies and moved on with the 4 points. Spencer ‘Plugger’ Blamey was close to best-on, with his gigantic aura kicking 4 sausage rolls and being the teams big target up forward, and Freddy ‘Errol’ Marmo was clinical, as always. Game 2, however, didn’t hold the same fortunes, with the Northcote boys getting absolutely robbed.

The final group stage match was a must win against Lalor. The boys came out strong, with skipper Finbar Kennedy arriving with guns blazing, finishing the match with 30 disposals and a goal to go with it. Some spot fires emerged with the opposition, but the Northcote lads held their heads and remained composed from start to finish, with dynamic forward/midfielder Austin Ioannou snagging a lovely snap from an impossible angle after a lovely assist from the wizard Zac Henderson.

This brought us to the grand finale against the old rival Thornbury High. It started tight early before Samuel ‘The fish’ Evans got us going with a beautiful finish to put us in front by a goal. Our midfield with Harry ‘Sheep’ Kooloos racking up his fantasy stat sheet was dominant and from there a comfortable victory emerged, sending Northcote into the next round and leaving the squad satisfied with the result. Viewbank don’t know what’s coming for them. Cheers Rolls Royce for coaching and Cameron the Silk Wilkins showing class as always off the field.

Senior Badminton

Well done to our Senior Badminton teams who competed in the Divisional Competition on April 28. Our players had the opportunity to play singles and doubles matches against other school within our division. All teams had some competitive matches throughout the day, they all played well and showed great support to each other.

State Swimming

On May 1 we had 6 students compete in the State Swimming Championships at MSAC. To qualify to get to this level is an amazing achievement.  Qualifying in individual events we had Joshua Martin competing in 50m Freestyle, Raff Butteris in the 50m Backstroke and Charlie Butteris in the 200m Individual Medley.

We also had our 12 –13 Boys Relay team compete with team members Raf Butteris, Max Behrenbruch, Fitzy Gurtler and Elijah Teoh Buldt.  Congratulations Boys you all did an amazing job.  We will definitely see you all back at State many more times throughout your time at NHS.

Yr 8 Regional Tennis

Year 8 Boys Regional Tennis played Tuesday 29th April.

After finishing 3rd last year in the State finals our 6 Year 8 boys were primed for their Regional matches this year. Playing 4 singles and 2 double matches against Coburg and Diamond Valley we won  6 sets to 0 in both matches. In the final against Viewbank we repeated our success winning 6 sets to 0. Over the day we only dropped 3 games out of 75 played. Our number 1 player Leon Suljovic 8I had just returned from tournaments in Japan and Sydney and dominated his Regional opponents. Our other players Harry Dichiera 8E, Liam Cowie 8D, Oscar Gaymer 8J, Oscar Sharp 8G and Alessio Pasquale 8 E were all equally impressive dominating their opponents. We look forward to the State finals later in the year. A special mention to Leon’s mother Kazuko and his sister ex NHS student Lily Suljovic who attended the tournament to support our students.

Yr 7 Regional Baseball

On Tuesday 29th April the year 7 boy’s regional baseball. With our legendary 11 students, we hit some smashing home runs and enjoyed a lot of laughter. Huge shoutout to our parent coach Dave for stepping in and helping the boys bring home 2nd after a rough start. The boys persisted through the day, improving with every game played. They showed great teamwork and were encouraging to not only each other but also the other schools that were there. They were incredibly respectful towards the umpires and conveners for the day. Well done to a fantastic and fun day!

Last Tuesday, the Senior girls’ soccer team played at the division soccer tournament at DISC. The team started off a very successful day with a convincing 13-0 win against Reservoir, followed by a 10-0 win against Lalor North and finished off with a comfortable 6-0 against Lalor. The whole team stepped up and contributed during all these fantastic wins, shoutout to Emily Togneri and Lyla Ross who scored most of the goals between the two of them! The team is now off to the regional competition in the coming weeks, hoping for similar success!

Senior Basketball

On Friday 17th May the Senior Girls Basketball squad played at Narrandjeri Stadium. The A team faced Preston first up, which was always going to be an early grand final. Led by Zoe Pana and Jess McKain, the girls won in a close one 22-17. The remaining 2 games were won solidly against Lalor North and SEDA, allowing some role players extra court time and even knocking down some 3s (Jade and Daisy). The team finished off the day as overall winners and now progresses through to the Regionals which is to be played next term. The B team, aided by some fill ins thanks to Emmalyn, also performed strongly and won both games they played.
