Term 2 Takes Off In 5/6N!

Gravity and our Solar System

In Term 2 we have been learning about Gravity and our Solar System. We did a homework task where we had to write about how the Solar System works. We had to create a  poster and we had the opportunity to type or handwrite. Our next homework task involves us making our own 3D Solar System diorama.  We are learning about the Sun, Gravity, Inner Planets and Constellations.

Debating

In the 5/6 level we started a debating course run by Mrs Sandra De Geest. Each week every class participates for 90 minutes session. Each week there is a debate held and we have 6 people divided into 2 teams.

The first team is called the ‘affirmative team’ and they have to agree with the topic and try to win the debate by arguing with the other team.

The negative team disagrees with the topic and has to try and persuade the other team.

There are different roles for students to do such as time and stopwatch recorder, chairman, the two adjudicators. All of the 5/6s are very excited to be doing this great program.

First Aid

Earlier this term, we did a First Aid course and learnt about the basics of First Aid. First Aid took place upstairs in the shared area. We learnt about CPR and how to manage calls on the phone with the ambulance. The fun thing about the incursion was practicing CPR on the manikins and answering questions. We learnt about the recovery position and how to check if the person is breathing. We liked the First Aid because we could use our hands to practice CPR and now we could save someone's life if something happened.

Gala Day

Gala day is an event in Grade 5/6 where students compete against other schools playing interschool sports. This took place at Mulgrave Primary School and at Freeway reserve. We play a range of different sports against the opposing schools.

It is split into 8 different sports. There are 4 sports for Summer and 4 for Winter.

For Volleyball, we played 12 games in total.

For Tennis, we were split up into two teams and given allocated numbers based on our skill.

For T-Ball we played 8 games over a course of a 2 day period, each game being 50 minutes long.

For Cricket, we played a few games as well and everyone was trying their best!

We were responsible and respectful, we showed great sportsmanship and most importantly we all had fun!

Mother’s Day

Mother’s day is a very special day that happens every year. Mother’s day at SJV was last Thursday, when the mums and other special women in our life came into our classrooms. We then gave our special visitors a beautiful card which we made and a pot plant which we decorated with some seeds inside.  This activity was so meaningful to us because we got to spend quality time together and  we also expressed appreciation.
