Senior School News

Upper Secondary (Years 9-10)

Café

The 9/10 team have been hard at work running the café program. Every Thursday, we prepare a large number of wraps (usually around 35) to deliver and serve to staff around the school. Students do a great job assembling and preparing the wraps. We have been working on describing our wraps in our Writing, and using persuasive writing to convince teachers to make a purchase. We believe our wraps are delicious, healthy, crunchy, and nutritious! You can even try our wraps at the upcoming Winter Fete.

Farm

Last week, 9/10E visited our KDC farm. They had some time to explore the farm, and then jumped in to help our HOL team do some jobs. It looks like they had a great time and enjoyed exploring the farm. They then applied this experience to their writing, and focused on writing sentences about their time at the farm. They even visited the farm chickens (which were raised by our year 9/10s last year!)

Travel Training

9/10A, B, and C started off the term Travel Training to Melbourne Central. They had a great time exploring the centre, where they focused on skills such as, planning their journey, navigating the station and centre, and purchasing their lunch. We also focus on skills such as appropriate behaviour on the train and in the community. 9/10B did a scavenger hunt where they searched for the most expensive items in their favourite shops- can you believe the most expensive set of Lego costs $1200!

Senior Secondary (VPC/ASDAN)

In Term Two, students in VPC have been learning to explore possible post-school education and employment pathway options as part of their project this term.

We’ve had Uniting Services and Distinctive Options visit our school and speak to students about their service/ program.

Students listen, participate and reflect on the session and consider how these opportunities align with their own interests, strengths, and future goals, helping them to make informed decisions about their next steps beyond school.

 SUNSHINE HOSPITAL SHENNANIGANS

Clearing the garden
Clearing the garden

VPC has a new work experience provider, Sunshine Hospital, which students have been going to since the start of term 2. Last week we met with Volunteer Coordinator, Danny, who showed us a derelict garden he’d found. The garden was overgrown with head high weeds and building materials. The students made short work of the weeds and cleared all of them out in a few hours. We have been given a high level of autonomy over how the garden will be developed and there is some funding provided by the hospital to buy materials. The garden is overlooked by long term aged accommodation room, where many of the patients have dementia.

Students have started drawing cultural appropriate murals on paper, which they will paint onto the 6 large panels making up the fence. Students have really enjoyed drawing the murals and thinking about what images would appeal to the residents. We also plan to plant trees and flowers that will attract birds and insects and might even make a pond with a solar powered fountain. The idea is to create a garden that will give pleasure to the residents when they look out of the windows of their rooms.

The students enjoy having lunch in the hospital canteen, where there is a great variety of food options. The Sunshine Hospital is an exciting new VPC project combining creativity, imagination, physical labour and empathetic thinking. It has been great to see the students embrace the opportunities this presents and I’m looking forward to seeing the garden develop into something the students can be proud of and gives joy to the residents.
