Maths Update

At SKiPPS, we know that a strong foundation in the basics can make a huge difference to a student’s confidence and success in maths—and one of the most important basics of all is knowing your times tables. When students can recall multiplication facts quickly and accurately, it frees up their brain to focus on more complex problem solving, patterns, and mathematical thinking. But when they’re still trying to work out what 6 x 7 is, their brain is working overtime just to keep up—making every new step feel harder than it needs to be.

This idea is backed by research into how children learn. 

When multiplication facts become automatic—so that students don’t have to stop and think (or count on fingers)—they can give their full attention to the bigger ideas in a lesson. It’s a bit like learning to read fluently: once you’re not stopping to sound out every word, you can really focus on the meaning of the text. In the same way, fast recall of times tables supports everything from fractions and division to area, algebra, and beyond. Introducing Times Table Rock Stars!

We are excited to introduce Times Table Rock Stars (TTRockStars) as a fun and engaging online program for students to practice their times tables at home! Unlike Mathletics, which covers all areas of mathematics, TTRockStars focuses solely on multiplication facts, helping students build speed and accuracy in a highly interactive and exciting way.

Why are multiplication facts so important?

• ✔ Used in Many Areas of Maths – Multiplication is essential for division, fractions, algebra, and problem-solving. Without strong recall, these concepts become much harder.
• ✔ Frees Up Brain Power – If students have to spend time working out multiplication facts, they won’t have enough working memory left to apply to the more complex parts of a problem. Quick recall allows them to focus on problem-solving strategies instead.
• ✔ Improves Speed and Accuracy – Strong multiplication skills mean faster, more accurate calculations.
• ✔ Boosts Confidence – When students know their times tables, they feel more capable and are more willing to take on challenges.

Students in Year 3 -6 may have already received their login in details or will be receiving them very soon, so keep an eye out! 

We encourage you to support your children at home by setting aside time for regular practice, 10 minutes 5 times a week.
