At Oakleigh Grammar, our Junior School Greek classes continue to provide meaningful cultural experiences that bring the Greek language and traditions to life for our youngest learners. Recently, students explored the celebration of Protomagia (May Day), a cherished tradition in Greece that welcomes the arrival of spring with flowers, joy, and renewal.

As part of our lessons, we discussed the significance of Protomagia in Greek culture and compared the seasons between Greece and Australia.  While spring arrives in May in Greece, our students were fascinated to realise that here in Australia, it’s the middle of autumn!  We also learned about the swallows that return to Greece as a sign that spring has arrived, a lovely reminder of how nature signals the changing seasons.

To deepen their understanding, students listened to the story “Anna Makes a 1st May Wreath” using the character of Little Anna as a puppet.  The storytelling helped students connect with the tradition in a fun and engaging way, while also practicing their Greek listening and speaking skills.

To complete the experience, students created their own beautiful Protomagia flower wreaths, decorating them with bright colours and natural elements.  This hands-on activity gave them a sense of pride and joy, as they took part in a tradition that Greek children have celebrated for generations.

Through these rich cultural lessons, our students not only learn the Greek language but also form a strong connection to Hellenic heritage. We are proud of their enthusiasm and creativity as they continue to embrace the beauty of Greek traditions.
