Hellenic Culture

At Oakleigh Grammar, preserving and celebrating our Hellenic culture is at the heart of who we are. Through meaningful experiences and traditions, we help our students connect with their roots, understand their identity, and proudly carry forward the legacy of Hellenism in Australia.  These values are an important part of our school life and play a key role in shaping our students' spiritual and cultural development.

Over the past few weeks, our students have actively taken part in several significant Hellenic events. On Palm Sunday, students had the honour of attending the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy conducted by His Grace Bishop Kyriakos of Melbourne at Sts Anargiri Greek Orthodox Parish. It was a deeply spiritual service that reminded us of the importance of faith and community during the Holy Week.

On Holy Friday, 18 April, our Senior School students participated in the solemn Epitaphios service. Selected students were given the privilege of holding and carrying the Epitaphios during the procession, a moving tribute to Christ’s burial and a cherished tradition in our Orthodox faith.

In a proud act of remembrance and respect, members of the SRC represented Oakleigh Grammar at the 84th Anniversary of the Battle of Kalamata.  The ceremony was held at the Australian-Hellenic Memorial on Sunday 27 April, where our students laid a wreath on behalf of the entire school community, honouring the bravery and sacrifices of Hellenic and Allied forces during World War II.

This significant battle holds deep historical and emotional meaning for many in the Greek-Australian community.  By taking part in this commemoration, our students not only paid tribute to those who fought and fell but also strengthened their understanding of the important ties between Australia and Greece.  These ties built on shared values, loyalty, and sacrifice.

We warmly congratulate all students who participated in these events for their respect, dedication, and pride in representing our school.  Their involvement reflects our shared commitment to keeping the spirit of Hellenic culture alive for future generations.
