This week in Mathematics

Our Prep Studentsworked really hard on their partictioning (breaking numbers into parts to make them easier to work with) and subatising (the ability to instantly recognise the number of objects in a small group without counting them one by one) skills as part of their Part-whole unit. They are looking at partitioning numbers in two parts, three part and visa-versa looking at three or two part and working out what the whole is.

Why is this important?

Subatising and partitioning skills are interconnected. Subitising helps children see numbers in groups, while partitioning helps them break and make numbers flexibly. Together, they build a strong number sense foundation, allowing students to progress confidently to more complex operations, problem-solving, and mental computation.

Our Year 1/2 Studentshave been working on ordering objects based on direct comparison of length, mathematical language such as shorter than, longer than, same as, length, shorter and longer for the basis of length measurement.

Why is this important?

Ordering objects by direct comparison is a critical early skill because it builds foundational measurement concepts, mathematical language, reasoning skills, and real-world application. It literally helps children 'make sense' of the world in measurable, logical ways.

Our 3/4 Students have been working on identifying one more or less for numbers up to six digits, working with these numbers as well as recognising numbers as odd and even and writing the non-standard expanded form of numbers. Like the preps, they are using partitioning to do this but with numbers up to six digits.

Why is this important?

As we work towards working with bigger numbers in these ways allows students to truly understand how our number system works, giving them the confidence and fluency to tackle increasingly complex mathematical tasks with flexibility and reasoning.

And lastly, our 5/6 students are working on finding and identifying equivalent fractions by simplifying, comparing and ordering fractions using benchmark fractions and fractions with related denominators by multiplying and dividing.

Why is this important?

Working on simplifying, comparing, ordering, and finding equivalent fractions builds deep number sense, efficient mental and written strategies, proportional reasoning, and prepares students for real-world problem-solving and higher-level maths concepts.

Most of our students work in these areas, we obviously have a range on student skill and ability with some students working intensively with our intervention teachers and others are challenged with more complex problems.

Staying in Touch

If at anytime you would like to chat about the learning at Trintiy, or you have any questions or concerns about your child's learning, please do not heistate to see your child's teacher, Ms Helen or myself.
