“Habemus Papam”
Come, Holy Spirit,
Guide the heart of our new Pope, Leo.
Grant him wisdom and courage to be a shepherd after Your heart.
May Your will be done for the good of the Church and the world.
Amen.
We have seen the white smoke from the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican!
We pray for our new Pope. Pope Leo XIV.
During our last week of learning, our students have been learning about the conclave, what it is and what it means for the Catholic Church.
After Pope Francis passed away on Easter Monday and the nine days of official mourning (Novemdiales) concluded, the Cardinals came from all over the world and met in the Vatican to vote for a new Pope.
After gathering together, each Cardinal wrote the name of the man he would like to become Pope on a piece of paper. Each Cardinal then walked to the altar and placed the paper in a gold cup, and the votes were counted.
Once the votes were tallied, the papers were burned. As a Pope had not been chosen after the first vote, dye was added to the fire with the papers, and black smoke puffed out of the chimney. The Cardinals were required to vote again.
Overnight, the Cardinals chose a new Pope — Robert Prevost, an American/Peruvian Cardinal. This time, the papers were burned without dye, and white smoke billowed from the chimney to signal that a new Pope had been elected.
The new Pope selected the name Leo XIV and was dressed in his papal robes. He was then presented on the balcony of St Peter’s Basilica.
The senior Cardinal announced, “Habemus Papam” — We have a new Pope!
