Principal's Report

Tim Bernau | Acting Principal

Dear Skye Families,

And just like that, we find ourselves over halfway through Term 4! I hope you had a lovely Melbourne Cup weekend and got to enjoy some time to rest and recharge.

Pupil Free Day

A friendly reminder that Friday, December 1st, is a Pupil Free Day. This is a Professional Practice Day (PPD) for our teaching staff which is an element of the Victorian Government Schools Agreement. PPDs provide teachers with release from their scheduled duties to focus on the improved delivery of high quality teaching and learning.

Transition

With 'Step into Prep' concluding this, we now look ahead to the series of formal transition sessions which will involve the whole school. These transition sessions provide additional opportunities for students to form connections with teachers and students, build familiarity with the physical environment and allow teachers to continue collecting information that will be used to focus on ensuring a smooth transition for all students.

Prep Transition 1: Tuesday 14th November 9:30 - 10:30

Prep Transition 2: Tuesday 21st November 9:30 - 10:30

Prep Transition 3 (Meet the teacher): Tuesday 28th November 9:30 - 10:30 (Prep Parent Info Session)

Whole School Transition 1: Wednesday 29th November

Whole School Transition 2: Thursday 30th November

Whole School Transition 3 (Meet the teacher): Tuesday 12th December.

2024 Year 6 Leadership Program

In the coming weeks, our Year 5 students will embark on the application process for the Year 6 Student Leadership Program. This program aims to provide students with a genuine voice and develop a sense of agency that empowers them to influence change within the school and the broader community.

The 2024 Year 6 Student Leadership Program will:

  • Continue to offer formal leadership positions for students
  • Continue to provide students with opportunities to develop a range of key leadership skills including communication and decision-making
  • Provide greater role clarity for student leadership positions
  • Clearly outline the responsibilities for each of the student leaders
  • Provide greater opportunities for all Year 6 students to contribute to school improvement
  • Connect to the Year 6 inquiry unit in Term 1, ‘Discover Democracy’ that focuses on leadership and systems of government
  • Promote greater involvement and participation within the school
  • Formally recognise student involvement and contributions

Remembrance Day

Saturday 11 November 2023 is Remembrance Day — a day for us all to remember those who have served and those who have died in all wars and peacekeeping operations. Remembrance Day marks the date in 1918 when the First World War came to an end. It is officially observed at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month each year. Our school will be observing Remembrance Day on Monday 13th with a small, student-led service at the morning assembly.

Literacy Buddies Program

Last week, our Skye PS Student Journalists participated in Ardoch's 'Literacy Buddies' program, visiting Multinet Gas Networks. This initiative pairs primary school students with workplace volunteers, fostering literacy skills and providing real-world exposure to various professions. We look forward to continuing our connection with Ardoch next year as we plan further exciting opportunities for our students.

Community Update - Ballarto Road Upgrade

VicRoads will be upgrading key intersections along Ballarto Road, including Greenwood Drive, McCormicks Road, and Potts Road. Works are set to begin in early 2024 and conclude in mid-2025. Stay informed and attend the community information session on Saturday, November 18, at Flinders Christian Community College, 9 am – 11:30 am.

Your involvement matters. Please register your attendance on the VicRoads Eventbrite page to assist with planning.

Have a great couple of weeks,

Warm regards,

Tim
