What's happening in our classrooms?
Literacy:
During Literacy sessions we continued to read our Mentor text "The Breadwinner" followed by a variety of comprehension based activities around the novel. Students also read their Book Club books and make text to text, text to self and text to world connections. During Writing sessions, we finished up our learning on writing Persuasive texts. We focussed on the structure of a paragraph using O.R.E.O and using persuasive devices in our writing to convince the reader to agree with our opinion.
Numeracy:
During Maths sessions we learnt about decimals. In particular, writing fraction and decimal equivalents, ordering decimals and comparing decimals using the language greater than and less than. In our Non Number Maths, we began learning about Symmetry and enlarging 2D shapes. An extremely important component of Maths knowledge is recalling Multiplication and Division facts. We highly recommend encouraging your child to practice these at home by either recalling times tables and division facts or by skip counting. Check out the link below for a skip counting video you can watch at home!
Inquiry:
Students were eager to participate in a variety of science experiments and learnt how to record their learning using the Scientistic Method. They investigated how salt can temporarily melt and refreeze ice cubes and string together through a "freezing point demonstration" Over the next few weeks students will be creating and making volcanoes. We cant wait to show you some photos!
Wellbeing:
Kindness has been a main focus during our Wellbeing lessons. We discussed how we can complete acts of kindness at school and at home and understood how important it is to be kind to others. The Zones of Development are an ongoing practice in our classrooms and students are encouraged to discuss which Zone they are in and identify strategies they can use to get back into the green zone.
Celebration of Learning:
First Aid session:
Last Tuesday we were very lucky to be visited by St John's Ambulance and completed a short first aid session with them. Students learnt how to administer CPR using DRSABCD. They were very eager to learn and really enjoyed these sessions. Check out some photos of the 5's in action.
Have a wonderful week,
Year 5 Team
