Connect: Year 1

What lovely sun we have been having! We hope everyone is keeping cool and finding some time to play outside. Please remember to pack a drink bottle so students can stay hydrated. As the term progresses, days get hotter and students get tired please discuss the importance of resilience with your child. We are looking forward to working with your student during the last term of grade 1.

The Next Fortnight of Learning

Literacy

We are continuing to explore The Sloth Who Came to Stay as our mentor text during literacy. Using the mentor text student's are learning to write like the author as well as making text to self connections. Students are expanding their vocab as they investigate new words of interest from within the mentor text. Using creative prompts students are also stretching their imagination to write their own stories in their writers notebooks.

During phonics we are revisiting graphemes taught throughout the year to solidify their knowledge. The current focus is 'ee' and 'ea'. Next weeks focus consists of reviewing a number of high frequency words to build familiarity. Students are applying their phonics knowledge to read decodable texts and answer a range of questions related to sounds, comprehension and predictions.

Maths

Multiplicative thinking is the focus during maths for this fortnight. Students are working on modelling 'groups of' situations using concrete materials. This is then linked to pictorial representations of these situations. During problem solving tasks students are practicing picturing sharing problems, drawing them and then explaining their understanding to others.

Inquiry

The focus for our inquiry unit this term is Light and sounds. Students will explore sources of light and sound. They will make connections between sound and vibration, as well as light sources and shadows. Listening walks have been a favourite of the year ones lately, giving students the chance to enjoy the lovely weather while taking notes on the many sounds of the school.

Wellbeing

Students are continuing to earn Dojo points while upholding the school values. Well done to all those students who have reached 250 points and received their silver award!

Our Term 4 topic for Resilience Rights and Respectful Relationships is Problem solving. Throughout the term students will practice conflict resolution strategies. They will identify cooperative behaviour in a range of group activities. Practice individual and group decision making and solve simple interpersonal problems. These skills are beneficial for developing and maintaining friendships.
