Sir Gustav Nossal Statue

A Community Arts Project

Nossal has done it!

The Nossal High School Community has achieved its goal of raising $90,000 to commission a statue of our namesake, Sir Gustav Nossal AC.

Thanks to the generosity of a great number of people, the life-sized bronze tribute has arrived in Berwick and will soon take pride of place at the entrance to our school. What started as an idea, first envisaged by the School Council President, Dr John Inns, the project has grown and developed, capturing the imagination of a number of student cohorts, their families and the wider community. A range of fundraising efforts and special events have all been generously supported by individuals and community groups and enabled us to achieve our goal.

Nossal High School especially thanks:

Gillie and Marc

Gillie and Marc, recognized as "the most prolific creators of public art in New York's history" by the New York Times, are dedicated to creating art that shapes a better future. Their signature characters, Rabbitwoman and Dogman, embody the story of two opposites uniting as best friends and soulmates. The artists have gained global acclaim for their monumental public sculptures for wildlife, including The Last Three, King Nyani, and The Orphans.

Their unique approach to contemporary conservation has generated unprecedented awareness and funds to protect some of the world's most endangered animals. Most recently they unveiled "A Wild Life for Wildlife" in NYC, featuring the world's longest interactive wildlife tandem bicycle; "Love the Last March" at Gardens by the Bay in Singapore, showcasing a 200-meter wildlife-saving sculpture; and "A Wild Life for Wildlife" in London, featuring nine magnificent interactive sculptures displayed along the Thames in the heart of the city.

In addition to their conservation efforts, Gillie and Marc had the distinct honour of creating a statue in tribute to the legendary figure, Sir Gustav Nossal. This profound opportunity allowed them to celebrate Sir Gus's remarkable achievements and ensure his legacy lives on for generations, forever captured in bronze.

Gillie and Marc's highly sought-after public artworks adorn major cities worldwide, including New York, London, Singapore, Shanghai, and Sydney. Their accolades include being Archibald Prize finalists, winning the Chianciano Biennale in Italy, securing the Allens People's Choice Award in 2016 and 2018, receiving the Kids' Choice Award at the 2016 Sculpture by the Sea, and earning the Bayside Arts Festival People's Choice Award in 2019.
