Sustainability
Tomorrow's Leaders in Sustainability
By Aiobhe, Zali and Ollie
We have been doing a sustainability program for the last few weeks with Alex from the Port Phillip Eco Centre.
The first thing we did was we watched a video about lyre birds and learnt how they reduce forest fires from moving around the earth.
We have also been learning about resources, such as oil and plastic and we matched them to the products they make.
We got to share about our homework on Sustainability. An interesting fact we found was that if everyone in Victoria was living like us now we would need five earths to put all the rubbish.
We also did a competition of who could make the tallest straw tower. This was our favourite activity. Even though we learnt plastic straws are bad!
The cool thing was that the plastic straws got given to Alex, 8 years ago, from a cafe closing down and schools keep reusing them for the competition.
One of the most important things we have learnt is to put your leftover food in the right bin.
Put your food scraps like fruit and vegetables in the compost but if it's citrus don’t put it in there because the worms don’t like eating it.
We are having fun and can’t wait for next week!
Nude Food
Nude Food is back on Tuesday the 14th of November thanks to our Green Team!
Community Compost Fridays
Every day each class puts their fruit and vegetable scraps into our school compost bins and worm farms. We would like to create more compost for our veggie patch by inviting our school community to join in.
If you don’t compost at home, our Year 4 students would love to take your fruit and vegetable scraps and turn it into compost.
When and Where:
We will trial the composting every Friday 8.45-9.00am. Compost can be dropped off next to the veggie garden at the Ferguson Street entrance.
Please bring your scraps in a reusable container/bucket that you can take back home.
We accept:
- Fruit and vegetable scraps
- Tea bags and coffee grounds
- Egg shells
We do not accept:
- Meat, seafood and dairy (including bones)
- Fats and oils
- Bread, rice and pasta
- Plastics (including rubber bands, bread tags & fruit stickers)
- Dog and cat poo
Thank you for your support by helping to divert fruit and vegetable scraps from land fill and “closing the loop”.
