Library Service

2026 has started with a flurry of activity for the Library Services Faculty! We have enjoyed welcoming students into each of our campus Libraries, at Dalton Road (Pamela Coyne Library), Davisson Street (Sr Julian Quaine Library) and Reservoir’s St Stephen’s Gaudete Library. Preparations are afoot for many exciting activities in the various Libraries over the course of the year, and we look forward to sharing moments from them here in the Principal’s Bulletin!
This year, we would like to provide you with a bit of insight into the members of the Library Services Faculty – a little peek inside the “covers” of the staff across the Libraries, as it were.
To begin, please meet Mrs Elda Carbone and Miss Emma Bruty (yours truly!):
MEET A LIBRARY STAFF MEMBER! #1
Name: Mrs Elda Carbone (Librarian)
What is the best book you have read recently? My Friends by Fredrik Backman
What is your favourite genre to read, or to recommend? I do not really have a favourite genre, I like variety. When recommending I like to ask the person what they are interested in.
If you could only recommend one book to everyone, what would it be? I feel like books are an individual’s choice, so I ask for recommendations from people all the time. Read what interests you and it will help you lose yourself.
What do you enjoy doing when you are not at the Library? Relaxing and listening to/reading a book. Enjoying people’s company.
If you could have one superpower, what would it be, and why? To read people’s minds - I love understanding people’s behaviour.
MEET A LIBRARY STAFF MEMBER! #2
Name: Miss Emma Bruty (Librarian)
What is the best book you have read recently? I am in the middle of reading Death Sentence: The Decay of Public Language by Don Watson. For most of my early life, I planned to be a journalist and I am – as is Watson – aghast at the state of journalism and overall use of language these days. The book is brilliantly written, but also very funny! (Students can borrow this via our Wheelers eBook collection!)
What is your favourite genre to read, or to recommend? I love crime, suspense and mystery – there are so many authors who can keep you on your toes, wondering…what next?
If you could only recommend one book to everyone, what would it be? I’ve thought deeply about this, because I could recommend SO MANY, but I would say The Happiest Man on Earth: The Beautiful Life of an Auschwitz Survivor by Eddie Jaku. Mr Jaku lived to be 101 years old, and I finished the book astounded at his positivity and hope for the world, despite all the horrors he endured. I learned an incredible amount from him. (This book is also in our collection, if students wish to borrow it.)
What do you enjoy doing when you are not at the Library? Hanging out with my cat Merlin, reading, listening to music (or playing – I play multiple instruments, but mostly piano! - and singing), watching movies, and catching up with family and friends!
If you could have one superpower, what would it be, and why? I think if I could read minds, I would have saved myself a lot of trouble over the course of my life!
Stay tuned to learn more about your friendly school library staff next time!
Miss E Bruty
