SLEEP - The secret superpower for Learning

As we move through a busy term of learning, friendships and growth, we’d like to shine a spotlight on one of the most powerful (and often overlooked) wellbeing tools for children — sleep.

In recognition of World Sleep Day, we’re reminding our school community that sleep is not just “rest time” — it’s brain-building time.

Why is sleep so important?

For children in Prep–Year 6, quality sleep supports:• Concentration and memory• Emotional regulation• Resilience and coping skills• Physical growth and immune health• Positive behaviour and social interactions

When children are well rested, they are more ready to learn, manage challenges and enjoy their day at school.

How much sleep do children need?

• Ages 5–7: 10–11 hours per night• Ages 8–12: 9–11 hours per night

Helpful tips for healthy sleep routines:

✔️ Keep bedtimes and wake-up times consistent (even on weekends where possible)

✔️ Create a calm wind-down routine (reading, quiet music, gentle chat)

✔️ Turn screens off at least 60 minutes before bed

✔️ Keep bedrooms cool, dark and quiet

✔️ Avoid heavy snacks or sugary drinks close to bedtime

Simple routines build strong habits. Even small changes can make a big difference to your child’s energy, mood and focus.

If you’re noticing ongoing sleep difficulties, your GP can provide support and advice.

Thank you for partnering with us to support your child’s wellbeing. A good night’s sleep truly is a superpower for learning!
