Learning & Teaching

Dear LPS Community,
As our Head Start program ends, our students are stepping into their new year levels with calmness and confidence, knowing routines, expectations and values that will set them up for success. Over the past two weeks, students have built strong foundations in Maths, English and Wellbeing, while also embracing our Pegasus spirit and new school values which should keep them on TRACK for a successful year. From understanding classroom procedures to developing strong learning behaviours, our students face the year feeling prepared, connected and eager to learn.
Lysterfield Staff: Always Learning, Always Improving
Just like our students, our staff are always learning and striving to improve their teaching practice. On Tuesday’s Curriculum Day, we had the privilege of working with Bron Ryrie-Jones on Responsive Teaching- a key approach to ensuring our student’s learning needs are met.
Bron guided us through a model of learning, highlighting how factors like classroom environment and working memory impact a student’s ability to transfer and store knowledge in their long-term memory. We explored the importance of checking for understanding to ensure students are truly grasping concepts, not just appearing to do so.
To make learning stick, we need to be responsive- adapting our teaching based on real-time student feedback. We explored a range of techniques to achieve this, including strategies to engage all learners in thinking and discussion.
You might hear your child mention some of these techniques at home! Ask them:
- Have you turned and talked to a partner about your ideas?
- Have you experienced cold calling or being selected as a non-volunteer, where anyone can be asked to contribute?
These approaches help all students stay engaged, process their thinking, and strengthen their learning. Our staff are excited to keep refining these strategies in the classroom because at Lysterfield, learning never stops!
