SAKG NEWS

Welcome back to all our students, school community and friends from the kitchen and garden!  As part of this we would like to say a special welcome back to Wendy Ruddick, a much-loved member of staff, who will be filling in for Jodie whilst she is on sick leave.  Given that Wendy played an integral role in developing our school garden we know that it will be in excellent hands and that the students will love having her back with us!

In the kitchen we haven’t been wasting any time getting back into the swing of things, starting off the year with a popular menu selection of Mexican cuisine. We have students making nachos with refried beans, red and green salsa and guacamole with tomatoes and herbs from the garden, freshly cooked tortillas and Mexican chocolate pancakes. It has been a wonderful start to the year and great to see some new faces, along with many familiar faces, enjoying our delicious fare at the Delacombe Primary School kitchen!

Please try your hand at making these recipes at home, don't worry too much about following the recipes exactly for the salsa and guacamole, use the herbs that you have available and adapt to suit your family's preferences! You can buy refried beans in a tin and premade tortillas in the Mexican section at the supermarket if you want to take a shortcut.

Please find recipe links below.

In the garden our four group rotations from last year continues. Those in the animal group have been tidying the chook pen, particularly the nesting boxes, filling the food hopper, cleaning the guinea pig cages and making frozen treats for all the animals – much welcomed given the hot weather.  The harvest group have been collecting ingredients for the Mexican rotation in the kitchen, including beans, cucumbers, kale and mint. The grow group have been harvesting all the celery, collecting the seeds and then cleaning them by sifting them.  And lastly the create & observe/maintenance group have been pruning apple mint, spearmint and our curry plant.  Lots and lots of action!

Now for a couple of notices:

Firstly, we would like to remind families of what else our kitchen and garden program have to offer.  The garden is open for students to come and explore every lunchtime.  This maybe to help with watering, digging/preparing garden beds, weeding, catching butterflies, cuddles for our guinea pigs and chickens, plus so much more.  We are in the process of creating a timetable whereby specific days will be allocated to set classes so as everybody gets a chance to visit. Please listen to the lunchtime announcements and then come and join our garden leaders Ryder C and Rsmeet K as they will guide and help students around the garden.

Secondly, to assist with the smooth running of SAKG program we do require the support of volunteers. Thank you to those who have already put their hand up. We welcome everyone, whether it be new parents/families or ones who have been at the school for several years.  To be able to volunteer you will need to have a current Working with Children Check (Volunteer Card – free) which is available online and to complete an induction (information) session which we run here at school.  If you are interested in volunteering in the program please contact Mrs O’Brien, Mrs Ruddick, Kate or see the ladies in the front office.

And lastly, we would like to say a big thank you to the families of Sebastian & Celeste D, Tobias B, Audrey R, Paul & Lil W-Q, Paislie B and Ruby S for caring for the guinea pigs and chickens over the summer break.

We greatly appreciate your support.
