Picnic at Hanging Rock

Year 11 and 12 VCE Literature students recently enjoyed an amazing excursion at Hanging Rock as part of their Term 1 studies. Students Ciara Allen and Ana Lukic provided an insight into the highlights of their day -

“Picnic at Hanging Rock was an excitingly immersive experience, filled with a treasure trove of historical facts and ambivalent emotions. It was a truly explorative and a significant day for Literature lovers. The year 11s and year 12s shared an unforgettable journey with their teachers as we climbed the haunted rock and felt its sharp boulders leering over us. The hike allowed a new perception on a beloved story, embracing the nature and environment through the realism of life; it was as though the pages had come alive; hectic, wild and wonderful, with the added effect of VUSC students dressed in costume enhancing this effect greatly. Our trip involved a momentous hike on a path winding throughout the rock. Later we visited a local café in which many ordered a bite or two while a delicious lunch of cucumber sandwiches and homemade lemonade, was provided by two of our generous VUSC teachers, Ms Howard and Mr Sayachack.

VUSC Students were allowed to bask in the sun soaked grounds below the rock, wondering how deep the depths of truth at Picnic at Hanging Rock were. The legend was exhibited through a visitor’s centre in which students could harbour information and facts about ‘Joan Lindsay,’ author of the inspirational novel. The mystery was indulged through depictions of the earthy environment and silence of the beauty filled rock.

A humongous thank you to VUSC for their collaboration in making this experience happen. Students and teachers were able to live an unforgettable day, learning the concept of an important lesson: "Difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations’ - as quoted by one of our VUSC students."
