Grade 5/6 parliament excursion report from Student Liaison Captains:
Brighton Beach Primary School Visits Victoria Parliament House
Last week our Year 5/6’s went on an excursion to the Victoria Parliament House. We all got there by taking multiple trains and steep escalators, and traveled into the city. When our classes got there we explored Parliament House and got shown the history by our entertaining tour guides. We learned about how and when Parliament was created which was very interesting.
One interesting thing we learnt was that one of the builders making Parliament didn’t want to carve flowers in the wood at the entrance to the House of Representatives like all the others, so instead he carved a monkey which would laugh at all the politicians as they entered. We also learned about the roles of people and the representatives who worked there. One of the highlights was that we all did a role play acting as the members of parliament and voted through a bill, just like they do in real life, to turn into a new law.
We were able to see the two different houses: The lower house (Legislative Assembly), and the upper house (Legislative Council). The Legislative Council was built during the gold rush, so if you visit it, all the gold you see on the ceiling is actually real gold. Another fun fact we learnt was that the mace which sits in the lower house was once stolen! To this day there is still a $50,000 reward if you happen to find it. The number one suspect was actually someone who worked there, named Thomas Jeffery, who was said to have done it as a prank. However, it has never been proven.

Production Poster Competition From visual arts and performing arts captains
Hi! We are Chloe, Wynter, Charlie and Carsten, and we are the performing and visual arts captains. We’re here to tell you the exciting news for the upcoming school production poster competition. We’re looking for anyone from grade 3-6 that would be to create an original and eye catching poster that will be used to advertise the upcoming production called Let the Games Begin.
The poster will need to be displayed on an A4 piece of paper. It will need to be bright and colourful and relate to the game show theme. Mrs Hellier will give all grade 3-6 classes details about the competition in their next art lesson. We are excited to see all the creative entries. If you have any questions you can talk to one of us.
Flynn @ the Matilda's game
Flynn: "On Wednesday night, I went to the Matildas qualifier for the 2024 Paris Olympics at Marvel stadium. I was lucky enough to get special tickets with my soccer club - Sandringham FC, that let me walk a lap of honor, before the game. I had an amazing time and got a signature on my Matildas scarf. #gotildas"
