Senior Basketball

The Mazenod First Team travelled to Warwick Stadium for the ACC Tournament in Week 5. The structure of the day saw them playing in a group of four, knowing that they would need to win all three fixtures to qualify for the grand final and move into the last 16 of the overall competition.

Our first fixture of the day was against Alkimos. The team played well from the start and won comfortably 44-14. Next, we met Quinns Baptist, with scores tied at halftime, Mazenod came out stronger in the second half and finished 31- 23 winners. Our final group fixture saw us face Carmel, knowing a win would secure us a berth in the grand final. Mazenod controlled the tempo of the game and won 36-14.

The grand final saw us meeting the winner of the other pool, Aranmore. The winner automatically progressed to the round of 16 in the ACC State Tournament, while the loser would need to win a play-in game. The standard of the final was much higher than that encountered in the group stages. Aranmore took the lead and defended well, Mazenod kept them in their sights throughout but could not overcome this talented team. Final score Mazenod 23 Aranmore 29.

Junior Basketball Carnival

The Junior Basketball team travelled to Warwick Stadium on Tuesday to compete in the ACC championships. With two games resulting in scratch matches due to forfeit, the boys were able to practice their skills and drills to put into use in their games against Carmel and Mercy College, with both games resulting in runaway wins for the boys.

Whilst a great result with all games being won by the boys, it was even more fantastic to witness their teamwork and sportsmanlike conduct on display. Well done to the boys on a successful day and for representing Mazenod College with pride.

Round 3

Mazenod College v Bullsbrook College

Mazenod continued their winning ways in Round 3, with a brilliant 135-run win against Bullsbrook College @ the Mazenod Cricket Ground (MCG). It started with Mazenod winning the toss and electing to bat. That turned out to be a great decision with the home team posting 191 runs with only 3 wickets down, from their 20 overs, which was also their highest score of the tournament.

Key contributors with the bat were Jevan B who continued his terrific form, scoring 64 not out, while his opening partner Nate T scored an impressive 56 runs. Captain Harry G hit a quick fire and very entertaining 32 runs off 12 balls with 4 huge 6’s.

In the second innings, Mazenod then bowled Bullsbrook College out for 56 runs.

The wickets were shared amongst the bowlers but the pick of the bowlers was Fynn T with 2 wickets for 10 runs off 3 overs.

Round 4

Mazenod College v La Salle College

The Graeme Wood Shield Cricket team made it 3 wins in a row, with a brilliant 95-run win against the undefeated La Salle team yesterday at La Salle College.

La Salle won the toss and elected to bowl. Mazza was more than happy to bat first and set a score. As Mazza’s first innings went on, it appeared hard to get value for money, with shots along the ground slowing up so a total of around 150 runs looked to be on the cards. La Salle looked to be in control after 6 overs, where they had us 3 wickets down for 29 runs. Mitchell P and Nate T steadied the innings until drinks and then ramped up the scoring with Mazenod reaching a total of 180 runs with only 3 wickets down. Mitchell P went on to score a dynamic and entertaining 99 runs not out, including 7 big 6’s. Nate T was again very serviceable opening the batting with 45 runs, but was denied his fifty due to unfortunately having to retire hurt.

Mazenod then bowled La Salle College out for 85 runs. The boys bowled very tight early in the innings making it very tough to score. The wickets were shared, but the pick of the bowlers was the young brigade, Mitchell G with 3 wickets for 17 runs off 4 overs and Fynn T with 3 wickets for 28 runs off 4 overs.

The team looks to have now qualified for the quarter-finals knockout stage but this will be confirmed later in the week.

Herb Edwards Tennis Competition

On Thursday, Mazenod College took to the courts of the Mt Lawley Tennis Club for the prestigious Herb Edwards Junior Tennis Competition. In a display of skill, determination, and sportsmanship, our students battled against the best junior tennis players in the region, ultimately securing a commendable third place and narrowly missing out on progressing to the finals set to be held at Alexander Park Tennis Club.

Mazenod College's team journey through the day was marked by some strong performances, with each player demonstrating skill and great sportsmanship. Although the team narrowly missed a spot in the finals, their achievement in finishing third in such a competitive field is a significant accomplishment.

Well done to the team and the parents who came and supported us on the day. We look forward to going a step further in next year’s competition.

Junior Tennis Championships

On Friday, February 23, the Mazenod Junior Tennis Championships brought an exhilarating blend of skill, determination and sportsmanship to our courts. The event, held after school, showcased the impressive talents of our junior tennis players.

The participating students were divided into two groups, and the competition was fierce from the first serve to the final point. The top two players from each group earned their place in the semi-finals, setting the stage for an afternoon of thrilling tennis action.

Hugh M, Ryder L, Benjamin A and Luke H emerged as the final four who secured their spots in the semi-finals. In the semi-finals, Ryder and Ben showcased exceptional skill and determination, winning their games to secure their places in the grand final.

The Junior Championship final was played in hot conditions. Both players won some fantastic points, however, it was Ryder who was victorious and is the 2024 Junior Tennis Champion.

Well done to all the students who participated.

Tennis Training

MONDAY MORNINGS WEEK 7,8 & 9

Students who are interested in improving their tennis are invited to come to the tennis courts on Monday Week 7,8 and 9 at 7:00 am for some coaching. We have employed Shaun Moore from Moore Tennis who will be running some training sessions on the lower courts. The FIRST SESSION starts next week MONDAY, 11 March 7:00 am.

Football Trials

Students are reminded that 1st and 2nd 18 football trials start on Tuesday morning next week (12 March) on the top oval at 7:00 am.

Soccer Trials

Trials for the Junior Soccer team commence next week on Tuesday and Thursday on the lower oval at lunchtime. All students in Year 7/8 are encouraged to attend and make sure that you bring your boots and shin guards.

Swimming Training

Swimming training for the ACC Swimming team continues this Wednesday at 7:00 am until the ACC Swimming Carnival. It is expected that all members of the team attend.

Competent swimmers who did not make the team but would like to improve their swimming fitness are welcome to attend training.

Mouthguards

The College again is offering mouthguard fittings for the upcoming winter sports season. This provides a great opportunity to have a professionally fitted mouthguard at the College campus.

All fittings are in the College gymnasium kitchen at lunchtime (12:45-1:25).
