🎓Careers

What’s Happening in Careers?

I attended the UWA brunch on Friday, 1 March, where there were some great presentations and new course details. I was impressed by the passion of the wellbeing team there, who are putting in place some great programs to ensure a successful transition for first-year students and looking after the students once they are there. Loved the idea of having golden retrievers in their drop-in lounge two days a week! They have also addressed parking issues with an annual fee of $180. Otherwise, daily rates are capped at $2.

Portal for Careers

A reminder that we have our new portal for Careers set up on SEQTA. It is updated regularly with news and opportunities and is a great resource. We hope that it helps people to connect with relevant information.

TISC

TISC will open on 1 May.

Early Offers will start after the Semester One exams and most offers are conditional on meeting requirements. These will be laid out in their offer letters.

Offers will be sent out once per month from July to December.

We have TISC coming to present on 7 May and I will run another session with the boys on completing their preferences on 14 May.

If they are intending to apply for university, they will need to apply through TISC. Registration is online and a fee of $92 is payable before they can set up their preferences. These preferences can be changed as many times as they like before the offers round.

Offers will be out before Christmas.

University Information

The universities have all listed their Open Days (see below under Year 12) – put them on the calendar now! The boys must get on campus and ask lots of questions before they make final decisions.

The universities will be at Mazenod to provide information to the boys in MyPath sessions and will attend our Mazenod MyPath Careers Expo on 18 June. Year 12 students will also have the opportunity to book individual consultations with university course advisors on campus here on 9 August.

Medicine and Dentistry

There are a few more requirements for students planning to apply for medicine. These students have been asked to let me know their intentions so that I can make sure they get the information they need. We have a representative from Curtin coming in to speak to these boys about the process on 7 March. There are several options to study in this field, so it is worth coming in to see me to discuss these.

The Careers Department

Students in Years 10, 11 and 12 have access to The Careers Department. There is a huge wealth of information on this site, where students can explore industries in depth to find out more about the careers and industries they are interested in. It also has a resume builder, digital portfolio, virtual work experience, scholarship finder, job finder and micro-credentialing opportunities. So much to explore!

As parents, you also have access to these resources. Your account will be linked to your son’s account, allowing you to explore together.

There are two ways to connect to your son’s account.

1. Students can invite their parents from their 'Profile' > 'Your account' > scroll to the bottom of this page and add their parent's email address.

2. Go to the login page and follow the prompts to set up an account. Once inside, you will be directed to explore the site and link to your child's account. Your child should already have an active student account, so you will not need to pay for the platform. If he hasn’t registered, do this first. You will need to enter the correct email address according to your son’s account and your son will need to accept the connection.

Year 10

The Year 10 students have all logged in to The Careers Department and completed profiling activities to identify areas of strength and interest and how these might make them a good fit for particular career areas. They have also had an opportunity to explore several industries through the online resources. Ask them about this and have a look with them!

Year 11

The Year 11 group split into university and General/VET groups for our last session. The university-bound students had a presentation on understanding the language around applying for courses and where to find information on entry requirements and prerequisites. The course-switching process was also explained to them.

The General/VET group had a presentation from MEGT about applying for apprenticeships and received valuable insights into the process and opportunities available.

Year 12

We have been very busy conducting interviews with our Year 12 cohort. We are aiming to speak to all Year 12s by the end of the term and help them with planning for next year. Ask your son if they have had a conversation with Ms Eaton or Mrs Johnson yet and ask them about what they are considering. It will be a busy month of university Open Days – I hope to see lots of the boys there!
