Grade 1 Report

Mr Huff

The Grade One students have been learning about their feelings and how to deal with them. Each of the Grade One reading groups read and discussed the book Mr Huff by Anna Walker.

We made predictions and connections to ourselves as we read.  We were lucky enough to have Meerkat productions visit and perform a variation of the book ‘Mr Huff’. This interactive, entertaining and engaging production focused on emotional intelligence and self-awareness. It helped to show students how to identify when they are having a ‘bad day’ and provided strategies on how to make it better.

Students were able to make links to the Zones of Regulation used daily across the school. They discussed and suggested strategies characters in the book could use to ‘get out of a huff’. They were then able to apply these to their own location in the Zones of Regulation.

Grade One students then created a Mr Huff collage. They worked together to create a list of strategies they could use to help ‘get out of a huff’. It was outstanding to see the different ideas and strategies the students were able to come up with. Their collage of Mr Huff was created using recycled newspaper helping students fine motor skills when creating the right shape of paper to fit into their drawing of Mr Huff.
