News from the Art Rooms

Welcome back to the Art Room for Term 1 2024!

We have another packed year of creativity ahead of us with so many exciting art projects planned.  It was so wonderful to welcome back all the children into our art rooms at the start of the year. Our new Prep children have settled in well and are off to a great start. It was so wonderful welcoming the new Grade 2 students in the Senior Art Room. We have so many exciting art projects to be created this year.

Senior School Art Room

In Grade 2 we are exploring the art of Gunter Christmann. Gunter is a German born Australian artist who uses interesting techniques to create art. He is a great artist for children to look at as he never lost his child-like perspective.  We have collected our treasure to fill our ‘shuffle’ boxes and we are now drawing our treasure from a ‘birds’ eye view’.

Grade 3 children have been looking at artworks indigenous artists from around Australia, the Torres Strait and Tiwi Islands. The students have been exploring how different tribes use unique symbols in their art works. Next step is creating our own painting with our own unique symbols.

The Grade 4 children have been exploring the special relationship complementary colours share. We have identified which colours look best with each other and now we are ready to create our own “sprankle painting” in the style of Australian artist Gunter Christmann and unique composition painting in the style of Etel Adnan.

In Grade 5 the children have looked at German artist Anni Albers. Albers was the partner of German artist Josef Albers and together they shared a love of colour and pattern. Anni is known for her coloured weaving patterns. The students have designed their own paper woven pattern creation looking at colour relationships and pattern designs.

Grade 6 children are planning their own woven painting. To create a woven painting the students need to create two similar paintings and then weave them together! I can’t wait to see the finished product!

Junior School Art Room

In Prep the children have been learning about the famous artist Joan Miro who was a Spanish artist who created abstract paintings focused online, shape and colour. The Prep children used what they learnt about Joan Miro’s abstract art to create their own abstract “portrait” using line, shape and colour. During this process they are learning about different lines and shapes and how they are used to create a picture.

Their portraits will then be finished by painting them using watercolour paints. We can’t wait for you all to see these amazing masterpieces.

Grade 1 children are creating their own Rose petal painting inspired by American artist Georgia O’Keefe. Georgia was an artist known for her use of colour and her unique way of showing us objects from nature. The children looked at drawing lines to create a rose. They then used acrylic paint to paint each petal a different colour. Their artwork will be completed by enhancing their artwork with oil pastel to create more depth. These will definitely look great hanging up on a wall.

Happy creating!
