2023 may be coming to an end but we aren’t slowing down in Aboriginal Education! Term 4 has seen us focus on connecting to Country by participating in our annual Dreamtime Story Workshops. This initiative from Common Ground brings us stories told by Elders, on Country and this year stories were from Nyoongar Country in Western Australia. We then came a little closer to home, spending a day on Dharawal Country in Kentlyn, making fire and rope the traditional way, hearing cultural stories from our First Nations guide PJ, learning the story of the Yidiki and how it is played and just spending some time experiencing this beautiful and largely untouched part of the natural world.
We spent a fun morning getting to know our incoming Year 7 students when we hosted First Nations students for a Yarning Circle. It was wonderful to see them all embracing new friendships and engaging with culture, and we can’t wait to work with them in and out of the classroom in 2024.
We have proudly celebrated the achievements of some deadly Camden High students. Makayla in Year 8 was selected to take part in the CSIRO Young Indigenous Women’s Stem Academy and joins on of our School Captains Amber in the program. We also had 2 of our students recognised at the AECG Aboriginal Student Achievement Awards, Josef in Year 8 and Breanna in Year 12.
Lastly, we are rounding off the year with some reflection on our learning. Each First Nations student has had a session with Mrs White to evaluate their PLP or Personalised Learning Pathway goals for 2023, and to start thinking about their educational, personal and cultural goals for 2024. As always, we welcome family input into PLPs and encourage you to discuss your child's learning and cultural goals with them. PLPs will be posted out to students and families in the new year and anyone wishing to discuss them further can contact the school to set up a meeting with Mrs White.
Thanking all our families for their continued support of our students and programs this year. Christmas is a time when we come together, sharing our stories and journeys and we hope you are all able to take the time to come together for a safe and happy holiday season.
