Homework at St Michael's

Research tells us that doing homework increases students' learning and helps them learn important life skills such as organisation, problem-solving, goal-setting, and perseverance.

At St Michael's students from each level are provided with the following homework opportunities.

PrepIn the Prep level, homework includes reading a levelled text each night, practising the letter sounds and digraphs and asking comprehension questions. They are also asked to read and write their high frequency words. It is encouraged that parents use the language of mathematics at home with their children and look for real life applications of these skills, such as counting things in everyday contexts.
One/TwoIn One/Two, students are expected to complete nightly reading that is recorded in their reading log books and then checked by teachers throughout the week. The students have the opportunity to practise Maths concepts through the online game of Prodigy. This is optional for all students and just used as an extra if students choose to use it.
Three/FourOptional homework rubrics are emailed to parents twice a term.  The learning opportunities the rubrics provide will support and extend the child’s understanding of concepts covered throughout the term. To monitor and encourage regular reading, children will take charge of logging their reading in their diaries each night.
Five/Six

A homework rubric is handed out each fortnight.

This includes daily tasks that such as reading and times tables practise. Students also have to complete their Literature Circles and spelling homework weekly.

There are 3 compulsory tasks that need to be completed by the end of the fortnight that are Inquiry/Maths/Literacy based.
