Referendum Day Barby

A big thankyou to all our parents and children who volunteered their services at our Referendum Day Barby. Sizzling sausages served with onion, and Egg and Bacon rolls were served up in vast quantities! It was a very busy day and a fantastic fundraising event for our school.

OZ Rocks Club

Our Mathematicians are hard at work this week competing for the Oz Rock Club Award. Headphones and laptops have been plentiful in the hall during afternoon recess! Toorak PS is currently coming 11th with 2 more days to run.

Stonnington Council Step-Up Transition Program

Our Grade 6s have been involved in a Step-Up Transition Program run by Stonnington Council. This program has helped students identify what their concerns are for high school, and also has allowed them to share what they are looking forward to. The program engaged students in activities where they examined high school maps and timestables to help with navigation to different classes, and did balancing tasks to help understand how to ensure self-care occurs when feeling stressed with extra pressures such as homework or adjusting to a new routine. Overall the program was very successful, and the students felt that their worries regarding high school were addressed in an open and safe way.

Respectful Relationships- Wellbeing Programme

This term, students will be looking at Topic 8: Positive Gender Relations

Learning activities within this topic focus on:

  • Building an understanding of the effects of gender-based violence.
  • Developing the skills needed to solve problems and set boundaries within relationships.
  • Developing peer support and help seeking skills that can be applied in response to situations involving gender-based violence.

We are planning to achieve two things through this initiative;

  1. Create a safe place for all our students to reach their potential.
  2. By educating young people how to engage in safe and positive relationships, we will provide them with the skills necessary to engage in safe adult relationships.

Why are we covering this topic?

Family violence is one of the most significant and complex issues facing Victorian communities, with a devastating impact on the health and wellbeing of many Victorians.

Victoria’s Plan for Change recognises that family violence is preventable and that schools play a critical role. This supports the range of evidence that was presented to the Royal Commission. This body of research indicates that:

  • Violence against women and their children is deeply rooted in power imbalances that are reinforced by gender norms.
  • Attitudes, gender stereotypes and social norms are learned through social and cultural expectations.

Schools can be effective in changing these attitudes and subsequently in reducing the incidence of family violence.

Each lesson has been specifically designed to match the age of the students within that particular year group.
