Enhancement

The year is coming to a gradual, inevitable close, and Mazenod's Enhancement program has been abuzz with activity and looming change. The Year 7s, 8s and 9s are busy completing their remaining assessment items for 2023, as the Year 10s and 11s gird themselves for an understandably nerve-wracking exam season. Subject selections have been submitted and numerous students are moving further down the various accelerated pathways in Middle and Senior School. We wish them nothing but the best in 2024. Our students have utilised this academic year to the fullest, setting some very high bars for themselves in the future. Superb work has been produced across the board and it is - as always - a humbling privilege to see just how much our cohort has to offer and contribute to our evergreen community.

Speaking of that community, there are two major changes that need to be talked about. The first is a very happy change, as Ms Joanna Phillips takes the reins of our learning area and becomes the new gifted and talented leader. I am honoured to hand over this role to such an incredibly dedicated, passionate, and supremely able person. She will bring enormous energy and vitality to the job, ensuring the success of enhancement at Mazenod for many years to come. Welcome aboard, Ms Phillips!

Sharing good news is easy. However, I must take this opportunity to also share some sad news, for those who were unaware. Mr Joseph Moore, an absolute stalwart of Mazenod College for decades now, and the individual most singularly responsible for the strength of some of our most traditionally successful programs, is retiring at the end of this year. Our sad news is his welcome rest, after a career teeming with plaudits, well-deserved honours, and enormous achievement. Enhancement history and the humanities department at our school would be unthinkably different and unmistakably lesser without his guiding hand. He has shepherded and nurtured students of every ability level to their best selves, over the years. As an enhancement history teacher, he is absolutely irreplaceable. The best we will be able to do is offer the opportunity to the next teaching generation to chart their own course and make their own mark on this program.

Mr Moore, you are one of a kind, and we sincerely hope that you enjoy retirement and more time with your wonderful family.
