Year 11 Biology

In Year 11 Biology, students study meiosis, a special type of cell division that reduces the chromosome number by half, creating four unique daughter cells, each with half the number of chromosomes of the original cell. This process is essential for sexual reproduction and ensures genetic diversity. During meiosis, one round of DNA replication is followed by two rounds of cell division, called meiosis I and meiosis II. The resulting gametes, such as sperm and eggs in animals, fuse during fertilization to form a new organism with a complete set of chromosomes. Students modelled meiosis using jelly snakes and lollies, creating a sequence of pictures outlining each step in the process.
