A great report from Carter and Kolby regarding the Opens boys state carnival!

“From the 25th to the 27th of June, five of us Glen boys represented the North West open boys touch team in Adamstown, Newcastle. Day 1 saw us play Hunter valley, last year’s winners. We went down 0-13 with much to learn. We picked our game up for the next 2 games with the score line being 1-3 against Sydney West and 4-5, nearly getting over Riverina. We finished the day off with a highly drilled Sydney East team and lost 3 tries to 12. With the boys all finally starting to gel together day 2 comes around which had us playing 3 games. We started day 2 with North Coast where we went down 2-7 still getting better as a team and starting to play some good looking touch. For game 2 we played South Coast where we went down 1-7. We finished off day 2 playing Western where we lost 2-5 with fatigue really starting to set in. After a good nights sleep and watching NSW regain some glory we start our third and final day against Sydney South West where we lost 3-5, clearly still improving. Finally, with some exhausted bodies and only a few light injuries we play our 9th game and our last game against a highly competitive Sydney North which saw us finish the competition how we started with a 0-12 loss. After all votes were in, we nominated our very own Brendan Landsborough to be the North West player of the carnival. Despite the scorelines we still put up a good game with each individual doing their part and learning little by little how to improve their game. The 3 day carnival was great fun with many skills learnt around the game with many thanks to our coach Mr Budda-dean and our families who drove us down there and supported us through every game. “

BUCKLEY SHIELD - REGIONAL FINAL SHOW DOWN!

Overall Congratulations to the GIHS Buckley Shield squad today who competed strongly against Farrer Memorial Agricultural College in the Regional Final. The first half involved strong and pressured defence which saw handling errors from both teams. Glen Innes defended valiantly on the back of 6 cheap turnovers. The first half closed out at 6 all on the score board when Bradley Hoskins burst through the heart of the Farrer pack and scored under the posts. Half time GIHS were drawn with Farrer.

The second half was a more open affair where both sides reduced errors and played more fluently. After the full time siren the scores were locked at 16 all. The Buckley Shield format then requires 5mins extra time each way. Farrer gained early momentum in this extra time with two tries. To Glen’s credit they fought back hard and in the last two minutes they scored out wide. As Glen returned to onside position quickly Farrer meandered back as the clock was on their side at this point of the game. Extra time concluded with Farrer prevailing 26-20.

Our GIHS players were very courageous against a complete 14 year old Farrer squad. All players contributed heavily to a memorable sporting experience. These boys are home grown, from our community, behaved impeccably and represented their families and School with absolute class.
