Year 10 Careers Camp

Michael Harms

After kicking off the beginning of Camp with a long bus trip, we all were able to explore the campuses of Deakin Uni, The Gordon Tafe and Marcus Oldham Agricultural College. We learnt about what campus life is like and how our futures may look once finishing at Monivae. We learnt even more about what life is like after graduation when we arrived at the accommodation at City CYC when we had dinner with 12 new Monivae Old Collegians.  We got to learn about the various directions they have gone in since leaving Monivae. Valerian McCaskill, one of the Old Collegians, was guest speaker for the event. He talked about his career in electrical engineering from when he graduated in 2013 to today. He talked about how taking every opportunity that crossed his radar has propelled him as far as he is, and that now he is working on the largest solar batteries in Australia.

The next day was an early start when we went to various places for Industry Tours such as the Academy of Interactive Entertainment, the MCG, Holmesglen Nursing and Sea Life, among others. This was an opportunity to learn about various pathways after school and what is involved with different jobs. After quickly meeting up again for lunch, everyone went straight to their next industry tours with workplaces such as the Australian Defence Force, the Melbourne Arts Centre and the Victorian Institute of Sport. When that was finished, we could relax after such a full-on day with a movie, laser tag, ten-pin bowling, arcade games or rock climbing.

The final day started with the CBD Challenge, giving everyone freedom to roam the CBD, as long as we checked in at the Eureka Skydeck, the Myer Skybridge and the State Library. We were given three hours to do this, which was heaps of time to explore shops, cool streets and other notable places. After everyone had lunch and ran out of money, we met back up for the bus ride back to Monivae.
