Phillip Island Outdoor and Environmental Studies Camp

Merrin Shannon

Last week the Year 12 Outdoor and Environmental Studies group travelled to Phillip Island to study Human relationships with the outdoor environment over the last decade. This involved visiting areas to look at areas that displayed different aspects of conservational, economical and recreational relationships with the environment. We also looked at the relationship Bunurong people have with the Phillip Island area.

First stop was Maru Animal and Wildlife Park where we were able to get up close and cosy with the animals. We then headed off to set up camp and walk the beach at Cowes. Early the next morning we headed off to hike Cape Woolamai. This was followed by a visit to Bimbadeen Park and the Phillip Island race track. Nobbies was next and we were lucky enough to see a few penguins in their nesting boxes.

The Penguin Parade was the highlight of the trip and we weren’t disappointed by the numbers of penguins – just the incredibly rude tourists who constantly took photos and videos despite this being banned from doing so for the health of the penguins.

Many thanks to Tony who helped with the driving and supervision of a great cohort of students.
