Learning and Teaching

As we approach the end of Term 1, I would like to share an update on what has been happening in Learning and Teaching this term.
NAPLAN 2026
NAPLAN has now been completed for 2026. Over the past two weeks, our students and teachers have demonstrated remarkable resilience, flexibility, and perseverance.
Our first NAPLAN experience was not without its challenges. Technical disruptions occurred nationwide, requiring patience and adaptability from everyone involved. Throughout this time, our students remained calm and positive while staff worked to resolve the issues.
I would like to congratulate our Year 3 and Year 5 students, along with their teachers, on a job exceptionally well done. Their grit, cooperation, and determination throughout the NAPLAN period were commendable, and we are very proud of their efforts.
Professional Learning for Staff
During Term 1, our Foundation to Year 4 teachers have continued their professional learning in the suite of MultiLit programs. These include InitiaLit, MiniLit Sage, MacqLit, InitialWrite, and SpellEx.
This term, our key focus has been on InitialWrite for Foundation to Year 1 and SpellEx for Years 3 and 4. As part of this work, students completed diagnostic screeners within these programs. These screeners provide valuable insight into each student’s strengths and areas for growth, allowing teachers to plan targeted instruction and intervention from the very beginning of the year.
Our staff are doing an outstanding job using scientific, evidence‑based teaching practices to ensure students are supported and challenged at their point of need. This ongoing professional learning strengthens our classroom practice and helps us provide the best possible learning outcomes for all students.
Learning and Teaching Team
Our Learning and Teaching Team continues to play a key role in driving high‑quality teaching and learning at St Francis of the Fields. The team is made up of five members: the English Curriculum Leader, F–2 Inclusive Education Leader, 3–6 Inclusive Education Leader, Learning and Teaching Leader (Deputy Principal), and the Principal.
This team meets weekly with a strong focus on supporting students who are not yet achieving the expected levels of growth, while also ensuring that students who have met expectations are appropriately challenged and extended to remain engaged and motivated in their learning.
Recently, the team has been developing a shared understanding of the CESL Instructional Model, which underpins the programs we are implementing as part of the Magnify initiative. This model is grounded in scientific research and cognitive science, drawing on a clear understanding of how learning occurs. It provides a structured approach that supports all students, regardless of their starting point.
By embedding this model into our practice, we are gaining greater clarity and confidence in our teaching approaches. We are taking a thoughtful and intentional approach to this learning, ensuring our staff develop a deep understanding rather than rushing implementation. This will allow us to make informed, purposeful decisions that best support student learning and achievement.
I will continue to keep you informed with updates and new learning as it occurs.
Regards,
Grace Scalora
Deputy Principal – Leader of Learning and Teaching.
