Learning

Homegroup — now twice a week!

Homegroup teams are a core part of our relationship based approach to education at BYCS. To support this, we have increased Homegroup to two periods per week this term — giving students more time for collaboration within their Homegroup, student voice activities, and social and emotional learning.

VCE and VCE VM

This term, students across our Coburg and Richmond campuses are underway with their VCE and VCE Vocational Major studies — some commencing their certificates for the first time, others continuing into their next year of study. We wish all of them well as they work toward their senior credentials.

Excursions and Incursions

VCE Art students attended the Westwood | Kawakubo exhibition at NGV International this term, taking part in an educational program focused on the exhibition. Students explored curatorial considerations, exhibition design, and the conservation methods involved in presenting the work of Vivienne Westwood and Rei Kawakubo — two of the most influential figures in fashion history.

Courage to Care

Coburg Campus students participated in the Courage to Care program this term. The program uses testimony from Holocaust survivors and survivors of other genocides to explore themes of diversity, bystander behaviour, and what it means to be an Upstander in your own community.

Science Pracs

Practical experimentation is a core part of our science program. This term students have worked across a range of topics in the lab:

  • Evolution, homologous structures - Chicken wing dissection
  • Respiratory system - Lung and diaphragm models
  • Enzymes - Bromelain enzyme and gelatin
  • Cell organisation and structure - Cell posters

Professional Learning Communities

Our staff PLCs this term have been focused on Positive Classroom Management Strategies (PCMS) — working toward a consistent and predictable approach to classroom routines across both campuses.

FLiP

It has been an amazing term in the Flexible Learning Program (FLiP). The students have been busy developing their English and Math skills, bringing the learning to new heights. Outside of that there has been lots of engagement and progress in our Projects subject. In Art, students have been developing and creating their own board game, exploring a variety of different media types to create this masterpiece. In Passion Projects students have been exploring their own personalised inquiry projects. From developing a kitchen garden, turning seeds into saplings and a growing crop of edible plants, to developing a diorama that unpacks the impact that humans are having on the Australian environment. Other students have been learning about the elements of a V8 engine and the components that make it provide awesome power, exploring artistic acrylic painting,  3D modelling to design and develop printable models and music composition specifically focused on film music production. Overall, the FLiP program has been busy engaging students in deeper learning. A big shout out goes to the FLiP team for their work with the students - Rani our amazing ESO, Kate and Heather our brilliant art teachers, Sascha our maths guru and of course Zali, our rock (youth worker). We look forward to an amazing Term 2 and beyond! - Ben Pisani (FLiP Homegroup teacher).
