Kitchen Garden – Senior Program Update
Exciting things have been happening in the Kitchen Garden space this term! Students eagerly took on the challenge of entering a scarecrow into this year’s International Flower and Garden Show schools’ competition. With fantastic prizes on offer—including up to $1,000 in gardening vouchers—students were highly motivated and ready to get to work.
Before beginning, students explored the competition guidelines. Their scarecrow needed to meet specific size and weight requirements, be built on a 22–24mm pole and be created entirely from recycled or reused materials. This year’s theme, “Habitat Scarecrow,” encouraged students to think deeply about environments and how living things interact within them.
Working collaboratively as a cohort, students shared ideas and designed a scarecrow that would both represent and support a habitat. They carefully planned and constructed their creation, showing impressive creativity, teamwork, and consideration for environmental impact.
Students also took part in a democratic process to name their scarecrow, with “Buggit” selected as the winning choice through a blind vote.
We are incredibly grateful to Ben and Katrina Shannon for delivering Buggit to the Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne. Thank you for your ongoing support towards our school community!

Students were also excited to get back into the kitchen and start cooking. This term, they learnt a new recipe, Hokkien Noodles with Lemongrass Chicken. The recipe was simple to follow, requiring only the chicken to be cooked while the remaining ingredients were fresh. Students shared very positive feedback, describing the dish as delicious and many even returned for seconds!
Mums, Dads and Carers—if you’re looking for a night off cooking, your children can confidently prepare this meal at home, needing only a little assistance with cooking the chicken. See the recipe below!
