Mr Gullo & Nicky
Dear Families,
It’s been a busy and exciting week in Green Class! As we move through Week 9, students have been actively engaged across all subjects, exploring new concepts, developing important skills, and working together in hands-on, collaborative activities.
📚 English
In English, we’ve been exploring imagery and figurative language, learning how to research, take notes, and paraphrase information. Students have compared different texts and are now putting their learning into practice by publishing an infographic. This has helped them strengthen their understanding of main ideas, key details, and presenting information visually.
🔢 Maths
In Maths, students have been developing strong number sense and problem-solving skills. They have been renaming and regrouping numbers up to thousands for Stage 2 and millions/billions for Stage 3, as well as exploring number patterns. Students have been converting fractions to decimals, comparing and ordering decimals, and representing numbers accurately on number lines. During rotations, they played a “higher or lower” number line game, where one student picked a number and another had to guess it by asking if it was higher or lower.
In geometric measurement, students made paper aeroplanes, measured how far they flew in metres, and then converted the measurements into centimetres. Hands-on activities and interactive games have helped students enjoy learning while practising important skills in meaningful ways.
🔬 Science & Technology
In Science, students have been learning about the Sun and its influence on life on Earth. They explored the scientific process, conducted guided experiments to investigate the Sun’s light energy, and were introduced to the concept of fair testing. Most recently, they have been studying the Earth’s orbit around the Sun, learning how rotation causes day and night and how the orbit affects the seasons.
🌏 HSIE
In HSIE, students have been exploring Australia through the text Are We There Yet? They examined the opening sections, focusing on the map of Australia and the family’s planned travel route, familiarising themselves with the family members and their mode of transport. Students also designed a sketch map of a camper trailer.
Currently, they are analysing the family’s experiences in Western Australia, identifying key attractions at each location and describing the weather conditions. This work has strengthened their ability to interpret both written and visual elements of a text, while deepening their understanding of Australia’s geography.
🤸 PDH
In PDH, students have been learning how to navigate online searches safely. They have explored how to evaluate the credibility of sources, practise click restraint, and refine their search queries. Through hands-on activities, students demonstrated their understanding by constructing precise searches and explaining why they selected trustworthy, safe websites. These lessons help students build essential digital literacy and critical thinking skills for using technology responsibly.
