From the Assistant Principal, Cocurricular

Huge congratulations go to our athletes who competed at the ISA Athletics Carnival at SOPAC on Tuesday.  There were some fantastic individual performances leading to strong team results with our Junior team finishing third, Intermediate team finishing third and the Senior team finishing in second place, with an overall third place finish for St Pius X behind Oakhill College and St Augustine's College.

My thanks go to Mr Steinman and Mr Ritchie, along with all the external coaches for providing high-quality preparation for our athletes.

In next week's Woodchatta we will publish the summer coach allocations for the 2024/25 season.

Basketball

Our basketball grading process continued this week with Year 7 after-school sessions. Thank you to all the boys who attended the grading sessions—the standard of basketball at SPX was great to see. Afternoon grading sessions conclude today, and teams will be announced shortly.

Please note that in certain age groups, we have an oversubscription of players, exceeding what we can enter at the ISA level. As a result, development squads will be created. These boys will still have access to weekly training sessions and a Saturday program at Oxford Falls.

The training schedule for all teams will be shared once the team announcements are made.

Training will commence for all teams in Week 1 of Term 4.

MWJCA Cricket

The MWJCA competition kicked off on Saturday under beautiful blue skies. We have approximately 100 boys playing cricket for the school this season, and they were all excited to get the season started. We had a great first day, with 4 of our 6 teams starting with a win, and the two losses were both hard fought, close games. Thanks very much to all of the coaches, team managers and parent volunteers, your support is invaluable.

U14 Green

SPX Green 6/176 (Z Chippendale 48*, R Rapa 40, H Gardner 21) def. St Augustine's Gold 113 (A Kennedy 3/9, R Rapa 2/0).

After winning the toss and batting first, we got off to a great start. Rory Rapa and Zac Chippendale put on 94 for the first wicket in just under 14 overs, at better than a run a ball. St Augustine's peggged us back in the second half of our innings, with regular wickets and some tight bowling, but we got to 6/176 with good contributions from Henry Gardner and Ben Costain (19*), and some unselfish team batting.

St Augustine's started confidently and looked good for the first 3 overs, before Anthony Kennedy & James Sykes reduced them from 0/10 off 3 overs to 4/23 after 7. St Augustine's recovered somewhat in the middle overs, but we took regular wickets and they were never really in the hunt. Our energy in the field was outstanding, keeping the pressure on throughout and taking some excellent catches, and Blake Sobey’s captaincy was outstanding. Great first up win from the boys.

ANNUAL GOLF DAY 2024

Friday, 18 October

Northbridge Golf Club

296c Sailors Bay Rd, Northbridge

1:00 pm Start (Lunch) followed by 2:00 pm Tee Off

Following the success of last year's event, we are returning to Northbridge Golf Club in October for our annual Ambrose golf outing.

The committee’s focus this year is to maximise the appeal and to encourage as many parents as possible to join us for a great opportunity to mix with other parents and friends of the school. And, of course, to have fun. We are particularly keen to see more mums participate this year. Pull together a 4-Ball or just join as a single … either way a great day is guaranteed.

For more information please see the attached flyer below.
