Open boys take home their 3rd consecutive title!

In Week 7, the U16s and Opens boys and girls teams headed on a journey to Dubbo for the CHS Centrals School Touch competition.

Day 1 of the competition was a bit of a struggle for the U16s squads as they went head-to-head with some solid teams from across the state. The boys had a tough run, falling short in every game, while the girls pulled off a win in just one out of their five matches with many close losses. Despite these outcomes, both teams displayed fierce determination and enjoyed themselves thoroughly on the field. Simply being present is a major accomplishment since our teams ranked in the top 6 statewide.

Day 2 witnessed both our Opens teams securing significant victories, with our girls' team achieving second place in the state and our boys claiming their third consecutive title. The girls showed no mercy all day, while the boys came out with a fierce determination to reclaim that title once more. The contest was super tight and was decided by a count back. With the girls just falling short by 1 point against Dunedoo, they are determined to regroup and make a bigger and better comeback next year, aiming to secure the first gold medal for a Boorowa girls team, while the boys will be striving to bring home that title once again.

STEM Students Taking on Robotics Challenges

Our Stage 5 STEM class has been working with LEGO Spike kits to tackle a range of robotics challenges. The students are applying their coding and engineering skills to build robots for practical tasks.

Some students have programmed their robots to follow a line, using sensors to stay on track. Others are working on a robot that detects gaps in a surface and lays a bridge plate to cross over. Another project involves creating a robot elevator that moves up and down between levels.

These projects are helping students gain hands-on experience with robotics and problem-solving in a practical setting. It’s been great to see their progress as they test and improve their designs.

Current youth and community issues

Selected students were visited by Andrew Britton from the Office of Regional Youth. He is currently doing a trip around the Hilltops to speak with young people and get their thoughts and ideas on current youth and community issues. In the session students offered insight into, what they liked about living in their community, how  the NSW Government can include young people in the decision making, some solutions around youth issues and how the Office of Regional Youth can connect better with young people. The information from this session will be reported to the Minister of Youth, Rose Jackson, and is a great opportunity for our students to provide a voice to youth in our region.

Boorowa Central Students Volunteer to Restore Local Habitat at Ballagh

Last Saturday, a group of Boorowa Central School students took the initiative to give back to the environment by participating in a tree-planting event at Ballagh, a local property. Charlie and Josh Carney, Banjo, Sebastian, and Emmett Crozier volunteered to help Mrs. Corcoran establish a new shelter belt to restore the natural habitat and improve the ecosystem.

The students learned valuable skills in tree planting, carefully spacing eucalyptus trees alongside acacia and casuarina species. This balanced mix of native plants is crucial for recreating the original Box Gum Grassy Woodland, a threatened ecosystem in the region. Mrs Corcoran explained the significance of these shelter belts, not only for wildlife but also for the land itself.

These belts provide vital habitats for native birds, including the superb parrot, a threatened species. They also serve as important corridors for bird migration, giving wildlife safe passage through the landscape. In addition to their environmental benefits, the shelter belts will offer protection for livestock, shielding them from harsh winter winds and the intense summer sun.

This hands-on learning experience allowed the students to make a real difference in their community while gaining a deeper understanding of the local ecosystem. It’s a fantastic example of how Boorowa Central School students are making a positive impact on their environment.

Our Students Shine at Tournament of the Minds

A team of seven talented students from Year 7 to 10 recently participated in the prestigious Tournament of the Minds program, showcasing their creativity and teamwork after weeks of dedicated preparation. Over the last term, the group worked tirelessly during training sessions to hone their skills and prepare for the challenge.

For six weeks, the students collaborated on their long-term challenge, which centred on interviewing local legend Dale Naden. From this experience, they created a heartfelt tribute to his story in the form of an artwork, a beautifully written poem, and a dynamic dance performance. Their work came together to tell Dale’s incredible journey in a unique and inspiring way.

Last weekend, the team travelled to Wagga Wagga to present their project at the Regional Tournament Day. Competing against schools from the region, the students impressed the judges and audience alike with their stunning painting and the deeply moving poem. Although they didn’t take home the top prize, they were praised for their outstanding effort and creativity.

In addition to their long-term challenge, the team also participated in a spontaneous challenge on the day of the tournament. This challenge tested their ability to think on their feet, work together, and solve problems creatively under pressure. Once again, their hard work paid off, as they were recognised for their excellent teamwork and inventive solutions.

The school community is incredibly proud of these students for their dedication, passion, and the amazing talent they’ve shown throughout this journey. Keep an eye out for more great things from this extraordinary group! Mylee, Delilah, Lilly, Dea, Lilah, Ivy, Belinda.
