Year 6 netballers aim high at annual netball event
On Wednesday 11 September, four talented netball players from St Mary's College had the exciting opportunity to represent our school at the Southern Tasmanian Catholic Primary Schools Sport Association (STCPSSA) annual netball event, held at Dominic College. This special event is a highlight of the school sports calendar, featuring teams from various schools competing in friendly matches.
This year’s competition marked a shift in tradition, with teams now competing as Webb versus Doran groups, named after founding members Elaine Doran and Tony Webb. SMC was thrilled to be invited to send four of our netball stars: Adelayde Gill, Lucy Midson, Chloe Plummer, and Amber Richardson (Year 6). The selection process was unique, as the students were chosen randomly after meeting specific criteria.
On the day of the event, Adelayde and Amber played together on one team, while Lucy and Chloe teamed up on the other. The games were a fantastic showcase of skill and teamwork. Both Doran teams won their matches decisively, with all players, including our SMC representatives, demonstrating impressive cohesion and sportsmanship. The matches were played in great spirit, reflecting the strong camaraderie among the southern Catholic schools’ netballers.
The event concluded with a special presentation ceremony where Elaine Doran and Tony Webb handed out certificates to all participants, celebrating the efforts and achievements of each player. It was a memorable day for our SMC girls, who not only had the chance to compete but also to experience the community and tradition that make this annual event so special.
We would like to thank former staff member Mrs Glynis Devereux for her tireless efforts volunteering with our Year 5 and 6 students to organise and support this, and many other netball events, for our community.
Congratulations to Adelayde, Lucy, Chloe and Amber for their representation of St Mary’s College and for contributing to a successful and enjoyable day of netball.

Term 4 basketball clinics
We are thrilled to announce a very exciting opportunity for our budding basketballers from Prep to Year 4 taking place next term.
We are teaming up with the Tasmania JackJumpers to host a six-week basketball program, exclusively for students at St Mary's College and St Virgil's College.
The program will be running in the Nagle Centre after school on Tuesdays from 3.25pm to 4.25pm, beginning Week 2 of Term 4 (22 October).
Aspiring players can jumpstart their skills as they learn basketball fundamentals and concepts in a supportive environment, with an emphasis on fun and games. The sessions are delivered by community coaches, and all ages and abilities are welcome.
And, as an added bonus, all students will receive their own basketball to keep, plus plenty of great prizes throughout the program.
