Let's talk careers

Hydro Tasmania Southern Work Exposure Program

Congratulations to Sarah Thomas (Year 10), who was chosen as a participant in the Hydro Tasmania Southern Work Exposure Program. Sarah joined other Tasmanian students from Years 10–12 for a behind-the-scenes glimpse into a career in hydropower during visits to Hydro's Hobart HQ, Cambridge Workshop and Meadowbank Station.

Over the two days, students were fully immersed in the busy environment of the Cambridge Workshop, where they received a firsthand look at what it's like to be a Hydro Tasmania apprentice. They also experienced the inner workings of a real power station, visiting Meadowbank Power Station in Hydro's Derwent Scheme.

Thank you to the team at Generation Hydro for showcasing to our students what exciting careers in STEM are available in Tasmania.

Learning pathways to work and training

Thanks to a recent visit from Work & Training, our Year 11 and 12 students had the pleasure of catching up with former SMC student, Lena Abbas, who has recently embarked on an exciting workplace traineeship arrangement with Tasmania Police, which combines paid on-the-job training and formal study.

Lena graduated Year 12 at St Mary's College in 2023 and is currently working in the Tasmania Police prosecutions department as she completes her Certificate III in Business.

We are very grateful to Lena for taking time out of her busy schedule to share her experiences and insights with us.

During the visit, the students also heard from Kylie Petryk, Work & Training Group Training Organisation Services Manager, who explained how apprenticeships and traineeships can provide a fantastic pathway into a career in a trade or other vocation, giving jobseekers a head start in their chosen career.

Work & Training engages with individuals, businesses and communities to create pathways to employment across Tasmania.

The organisation provides apprenticeships, traineeships, training in qualifications and short courses, and jobs (through labour hire) in a wide variety of industries including automotive, electrical, engineering, retail, hospitality, community services, dental and business administration.

Work experience update:

Students get a taste of tourism, hospitality and event management careers

Andrea Xavier and Bella Carter (Year 10) completed a two-day work experience placement at Salamanca Inn.

Ella Fenton (Year 10) completed a five-day work experience placement at Jean Pascal Patisserie.

Bella Scott and Megan Mount (Year 10) completed a five-day work experience placement at Grand Chancellor Hobart.

Bella and Megan have been involved in the Seafood Directions conference, which promotes the seafood industry in Australia, and Bella diligently showed up for the 6.30am shift across two mornings – go Bella!

Well done to our Year 10 Work Experience students. We congratulate all students on their work ethic, their positive attitudes and their professionalism in the workplace.
