Exhibition
The Year 6s began their Exhibition learning last week. They will be working with Ms Neumann and myself as they engage in the PYP process. This began with them revisiting the elements of the PYP which have been a part of their learning at GGLPS. The elements they reflected on were concepts, approaches of learning (skills) and action. The students are now engaging with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals https://sdgs.un.org/goals as a starting point for them to understand the issues that face our world and it’s people. They are building their knowledge, knowledge being another element of the PYP, so that they can choose an issue to learn more about.
The central idea overseeing all the Exhibition is:
It is our responsibility to reflect on issues, express ideas and take action.
The PYP describes action as ‘Action, the core of student agency, is integral to the Primary Years Programme (PYP) learning process and to the programme’s overarching outcome of international-mindedness. Through taking individual and collective action, students come to understand the responsibilities associated with being internationally minded and to appreciate the benefits of working with others for a shared purpose. When students see tangible actions that they can choose to take to make a difference, they see themselves as competent, capable and active agents of change (Oxfam 2015).’ Principles into Practice: The Learner
The Primary Years Programme (PYP) summarises the exhibition as:
- The exhibition is the culminating, collaborative experience in the final year of the PYP.
- The exhibition is an authentic process for students to explore, document and share their understanding of an issue or opportunity of personal significance.
- All exhibitions are student-initiated, designed and collaborative.
- Exhibition provides opportunity for students to take action and positively contribute to their world.
We are excited for the learning journey that the Year 6s are taking as they work towards presenting their learning in Term 4.
Meanwhile, the Year 5s will be inquiry into a unit of study relating to How we Express Ourselves. The teachers of this unit will be Luke Napier and is focusing on the role of creativity in learning, expressing ourselves and in living our lives.
Please approach the Year 5/6 team with any questions.
