Learning for Life
As our second term of Learning for Life for 2026 comes to a close, we are filled with gratitude for all the wonderful families who continue to discover what our Early Learning Centre is all about.
A heartfelt thank you to the families who return each week, helping to create a welcoming, inclusive, and familiar environment where children can learn, grow and build confidence. We also love welcoming new families each term and watching them become part of our Learning for Life community.
This term has been filled with creativity, laughter and learning. Together we have enjoyed arts and crafts, singing, reading stories and of course, cooking delicious treats. It has been wonderful to see the children exploring new experiences, building friendships and having so much fun along the way.
Keep your eyes peeled for next term's exciting program, which will include puppet making, sensory play, and many more engaging activities. We can't wait to continue learning and growing together!
Thank you for being part of our Learning for Life family, and we look forward to seeing you all next term.
If you would like to see what our Learning for Life program is all about and register you can do so through our website.
ELC
Throughout Term 2, our ELC children have been busy exploring all things sustainability!
Together, we created a new garden area where children have enjoyed planting, caring for, and watching our garden grow. We also established a worm farm, learning about how worms help to create healthy soil and reduce food waste.
Our sustainability journey extended beyond the garden as we investigated insects and the natural world around us, encouraging curiosity, respect, and appreciation for living things.
It has been wonderful to see the children develop their understanding of how we can all care for our environment through hands-on experiences and meaningful learning.
Kinder
Kinder has been on lots of adventures in Term 2. They visited the top of the mountain, the Botanical Gardens, Nature Play, Kinder Gym, and their first Field Day. In Louisa, Kinder has been camping, flying to space, playing outside and learning through play.
Prep
We have had an exciting second term in Prep. We have enjoyed excursions to the Royal Botanical Gardens and visited two of Hobart’s oldest Churches.
In the classroom, we have been proud of the new things we have learned and have continued to enjoy our adventures at Nature Play at Lambert Park.
Year 1
Year 1 have been working very hard on their spelling and handwriting in Term 2. They love to learn new sounds and have words dictated to them. We recently learnt how to spell words with 'or' and 'ore'. Look at their amazing spelling!
Year 2
Year 2 have grown and learnt so much this term.
In Maths we have learnt to regroup using vertical algorithms. We were so surprised to learn that you can regroup for addition and subtraction. We have become quite good at it! We are also learning our times tables. We love using Times Tables Rockstar website, which also helped use with understanding the division symbol. Now we can work out multiplication and division sums for 10 and 2.
In Science we have learnt about all different type of materials and what they can be used for. It was so interesting to find out where some of our most used products are made and what they are made from.
In Art we made some 'Line Art' landscapes. We used lines and colours in different ways to create a picture, not just a pattern.
We finished our Religion unit with a Church Crawl with the Preps and Year 1s. It was a great excursion. We loved looking at the stained-glass windows in St Marys' Cathedral, and Mrs Piesse told us so many facts about churches.
In Technology we created our own Stop motion videos using characters we made ourselves.
Our last highlight has been taking it in turns being "Star of the Week." We get to be the class helper all week and then take our class pert Winnie home for weekend adventures.
Year 3
Year 3 has had a brilliant Term 2! We have celebrated great success in both our school Cross Country and Interschool Cross Country events. We have been busy rehearsing for our school musical, inventing clothes-folding machines in Science, and exploring the properties of 3-dimensional shapes.
We have also been creating our woodwork pieces for the school Arts Show and practising our Auslan skills. It has been a busy and exciting term filled with learning, creativity, and achievement!
Year 4
It's been a busy Term 2 for Year so here is a snapshot of the many things we have done:
- Made our own Water Cycle dioramas
- Welcomed Miss Thorp to our class for 6 weeks for her teaching practical experience
- Raised money for Cancer Council and Speak Up and Stay ChatTY
- Wore shorts and crazy socks
- Learnt about natural and man made materials and the environment
- Read 2 class novels "Leo and Ralph" and "Uncle X Box
- Celebrated Mary in the month of May
- Constructed our own 3D shapes using matchsticks and clay
....and above all we worked hard and played hard.
Year 5 Navy
In Week 7 Year 5 visited the Cascades Female Factory. Stepping into the lives of the convict women of Van Diemen's Land was an enriching experience for our classes. They learned hardships and contributions these women made to early Hobart Town. They have also learned of the connection of our College with these women, as our Sisters of Charity administered to the needs of these women.
As we look forward to our midyear break, we, in 5 Navy can be so proud of the quantity and quality of learning we have produced in the past ten weeks. Some highlights have been or visit to the Cascades Female Factory, the Live Life Whole Programme and our Settlement Projects. We have taken our responsibilities in running the lunchtime sports and play equipment very seriously and now hand over the baton to 5 White for the remainder of the year.
Year 6 Navy
What a term it has been in Year 6 Navy! Students have embarked on many learning adventures, notably in HASS, where they have been exploring the Australian Parliamentary system, in preparation for our Year 6 Canberra Trip in Term 3. The students also enjoyed a visit from a Crown Prosecutor, where they had an in-depth conversation about the Australian Judicial system and even participated in a role-play of how a case starting in the Magistrates' Court can progress all the way to the High Court of Australia! We wish the girls a safe and restful break, and we cannot wait for the hustle-and-bustle that Term 3 has to offer.
Primary Dance
Primary have had a busy start to their dance year.
They have been learning technique and strength training as a base to start building their own choreography.
They have all learned a routine, which they have also contributed their own choreography to.
We have performed the routine as a school community, and students have enjoyed both learning and devising their own choreography and polishing a routine to present with their peers.
The school community performance was an enriching experience for the girls as they learned that dance can be used to bring people together for fun and a common interest and passion.
At Mount Carmel, we love to build school community and help the girls to feel that they are part of something bigger than, themselves, their year group and their school.
We are now in full swing of learning choreography for our Arts Festival coming up in Term 3 along with our first Primary School Musical.
The students are so engaged and excited to be learning Musical Theatre in dance and cannot wait to present their routines next term.
Well done to the girls for their commitment and enthusiasm in class and we are so excited to share with you our next project for Arts Festival and the Primary Musical.
Happy Dancing!
