Behaviour Spotlight: Kindness on the Move
At South Geelong Primary School, we are continuing to build a positive and respectful environment through our School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) focus. Over the past few weeks, our spotlight has been on showing kindness during transitions, with a particular emphasis on moving safely and respectfully when using the stairs.
Transitions are busy moments in the school day, and they provide a wonderful opportunity for students to demonstrate our shared values in action.
What does kindness look like during transitions?
Our students have been learning and practising what it means to move kindly around the school.
This includes:
- Walking calmly and keeping a steady pace
- Giving others space to move safely
- Using kind and respectful language, such as “after you” or “excuse me”
- Keeping hands and feet to themselves
- Being aware of younger students and showing care when passing
What we’re noticing
It has been fantastic to see so many students stepping up and modelling these behaviours.
Staff have noticed:
- Students patiently waiting their turn on the stairs
- Older students showing leadership by allowing younger peers to go first
- Classes transitioning more smoothly and quietly between learning spaces
These small actions make a big difference in helping everyone feel safe, respected, and ready to learn.
