YEAR 6
FROM THE CLASSROOM
This week in Year 6, students have been wrapping up their learning across all areas as we head into the end of term.
In Mathematics, they have been tackling the order of operations, experimenting with adding brackets to change equations, and practising how to solve and balance equations accurately. In Writing, students consolidated their learning of recounts to create engaging pieces about Sports Gala Day, using the skills they’ve built throughout the past 5 weeks.
In Reading, students have been exploring how cartoon images communicate meaning. They have been summarising these images, identifying the main idea, and analysing the visual features that help convey a message.
In Inquiry, students completed their unit on Government and Democracy, taking time to consolidate their understanding of how our government system works, how laws are passed, and what are our rights and responsibilities as Australian Citizens.
As we reach the end of Term 2, we would like to acknowledge the hard work, curiosity, and perseverance our Year 6 students have shown. Their growth academically and socially has been wonderful to see, and we look forward even more growth in the second half of the year as they begin to transition into Year 7.
LEARNING INTENTIONS FOR NEXT TERM
Next term, our Grade 6 students will be reading 'Once' by Morris Gleitzman, a powerful and thought-provoking historical novel. The story follows Felix, a brave and imaginative Jewish boy living in Poland during World War II, as he embarks on a journey to find his parents and make sense of the world around him.
Through Felix's eyes, students will explore themes of courage, hope, friendship, and resilience during a challenging period in history. While the novel deals with serious historical events, it is written with warmth, humour, and compassion, making it an engaging and meaningful read for young readers.
Content Note: As the novel is set during the Holocaust, it contains references to war, discrimination, violence, death, loss, and the persecution of Jewish people. Some students may find these themes upsetting. These topics will be approached in an age-appropriate and supportive manner, with opportunities for discussion and reflection throughout the unit.
We look forward to the rich discussions, reflections, and learning opportunities that Once will inspire in our classroom.
